Horatio W. Shaw (1847-1918) American artist. Born in Dover Township, six miles west of Adrian, Michigan, Shaw began working as a clerk in Adrian when he was eighteen years old. In 1869 he went West, and in time became the proprietor of a hardware store in White Cloud, Kansas. He had been interested in drawing since childhood, but it was not until 1879 that he decided to pursue art seriously. Offered is is a large early graphite drawing signed, White Cloud, Kansas, approx. 22 x 16 in. Shaw left Kansas to study with Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts in Philadelphia. Much of his work there was portraiture and landscapes. He also visited art galleries and attended art sales in that city. Shaw is described as The Farmer-Artist of Michigan. Shaw was rediscovered by the Bicentennial Inventory of American Paintings Executed Before 1914. Shaw studied with Thomas Eakins at the Philadelphia Academy. His work was exhibited at the Penn. Academy and the Detroit Institute of Art. A major article on Shaw appeared in American Heritage magazine. All of the known drawings were purchased by a friend back around 1963 at Adrian College in Michigan. About 15 years ago we purchased the whole collection.
