LALU PRASAD SHAW (1937 BORN) "THE VILLAGE TEACHER" Signed lower right Watercolour on Paper 18 x13 inches Provenance: Acquired directly with a letter from the artist from a British Collector Authentcity certificate by the artist is accompanied with the artwork Lalu Prasad Shaw, born in Bengal in 1937, completed his education in fine arts at the esteemed Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata.Renowned for his highly stylized portraits of Bengali women and couples, Lalu Prasad Shaw's artistic focus lies predominantly on capturing the distinctive physical characteristics of his subjects. His paintings masterfully convey the expressions of his subjects with a remarkable economy of line and colour, imbuing each piece with an intimate aura.Influenced by the pre-independence Company School of art, traditional Kalighat Pat, and the timeless Ajanta cave paintings, Shaw primarily employs gouache or tempera in his works. Much like his own persona, Shaw's art is marked by simplicity and grace, featuring still, well-composed, and seamlessly smooth exteriors. This seasoned artist derives inspiration from nature and the milieu surrounding the vibrant Bengali middle class, often depicting serene and pleasant scenes from his own life on canvas and paper. His style is a unique and modern fusion of academic and traditional Indian artistic formats.Though he identifies himself primarily as a painter, Shaw developed a penchant for printmaking at the age of 32 and swiftly became a master in the realm of graphic arts. His prior experience with intaglios and lithographs contributed to his reputation as a printmaker, further enhancing the illustrious career he had already established as a painter.Shaw has exhibited extensively in India and abroad since 1956, leaving an indelible mark on prestigious international exhibitions such as the second British Biennale in London in 1970, two Norwegian Print Biennales in 1974 and 1978, the seventh Paris Biennale in 1971, and the second Asian Art Biennale hosted by Bangladesh in 1984.One particularly noteworthy aspect of Shaw's paintings is their understated yet sophisticated aesthetic. His work seamlessly synthesizes various stylistic elements to achieve a profound and captivating effect. Shaw's artistic legacy endures, with his work finding a permanent place in the collections of esteemed institutions like the Birla Academy in Calcutta and the Art Forum in Singapore.Lalu Prasad Shaw continues to live and create in Kolkata, where his son Partha has also emerged as a promising young artist.

Shaw studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata with influence from the pre-independence Company School of art, the traditional Kalighat Pat and the Ajanta cave paintings. Shaw has exhibited throughout India and Europe with permanent collections at the Birla Academy in Calcutta and the Art Forum in Singapore.
