A self-taught artist, he lived in Southampton, and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. His work falls into two distinct categories; firstly, wooded scenes with gypsies, rustic figures and animals, and secondly, beach or coastal scenes with boats and fisherfolk. His landscape paintings admirably present an image and spirit of rural life in Southern England. Shayer first earned his living in Southampton painting decorations on rush bottom chairs. He then moved to Guildford to work as a coach painter. The skill Shayer acquired in the lesser genres provided him with a thorough technical grounding that proved of use to him in his chosen profession of landscape artist. His career was helped considerably by the patronage of Michael Hoy, a popular and wealthy Southampton merchant, who owned extensive estates. Shayer reputedly chose to live in Shirley because of the beautiful skies that are typical of that locality. His love of the countryside of the South Coast, which prevented his move to London, is clearly evident in his paintings. He sometimes collaborated with Edward Charles Williams. His son, William J Shayer, was also a painter. Shayer was a remarkably prolific exhibitor. He exhibited two hundred and forty six paintings in the major London galleries, three hundred and thirty-eight at the Society of British artists, six at the Royal Academy and eighty-two at the British Institution.

WILLIAM SHAYER (England, 1787-1879). "Harbour". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 76 x 102 cm; 100 x 127 cm (frame). The British artist William Shayer excelled both in his coastal landscapes and in his folk scenes, and both genres happily concur in this lively genre composition. William Shayer was an English landscape and figure painter who was prominent during the Victorian era. A self-taught artist, he began by painting carriages in the town of Guildford, after which he took up heraldic painting. Finally, he began to paint in oil on canvas and became adept at depicting woodland scenes with gypsies, people and animals in front of inns and farmhouses, and beach scenes crowded with boats and fishermen. He lived mainly in the south of England, in Shirley, Southampton, but painted all over Hampshire and in a wooded district of south-west Hampshire called the New Forest. Michael Hoy, a wealthy Southampton merchant, was one of his most enthusiastic patrons and bought many of the pictures Shayer painted of the area. Shayer was a competent landscape painter, but is best known as a figure painter. His work is reminiscent in some respects of the paintings of George Morland, another popular figure painter. However, Shayer's work has a depth and brilliance not found in the paintings of many of his contemporaries, due to his skilful application of glazing. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (6 works), the British Institution (82 works) and the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists (338 works). His works are exhibited in numerous museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

William Shayer, Senior,  On the shore with boats and figures

              Est: £300 - £400

William Shayer, Senior,  British 1787-1879-  On the shore with boats and figures;  oil on board, 25.4 x 30.3 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Shayer was celebrated as a painter of rural scenes, combining both landscape and figure studies in a manner which recalls the works of George Morland (1763-1804). His paintings often depict modest subjects set within a landscape, with the small scale of figures emphasising the countryside around them. Shayer's work very much idealises this rural existence, setting the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity against the threat of rapid urbanisation in Victorian England.
