        19th century portrait of a lady, possibly by Isaac Sheffield (American, 1798-1845) or Nelson Cook (American, 1808-1892), oil on canvas, circa 1830. Depicts a lady with black hair, depicted wearing a black dress with narrow band of lace at the collar and sleeves, a floral decorated brooch, gold ring, and a long narrow gold chain. The subject is seated in a red chair set against a red drape with column and indistinct landscape beyond. Unsigned. Later stained and molded wood frame. Canvas – 30″H x 24″W. Frame – 35″H x 29″W. Note: we wish to thank Thom Miller, independent scholar and keeper of a website devoted to the portraits of Nelson Cook, for pointing out similarities between this painting and works by Cook.

        19th Century Folk Art Portrait of President Andrew Jackson by important and well listed American Folk Portraitist Isaac Sheffield (1798 - 1845) | This folk art portrait of President Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) is a unique folk art interpretation, with a flattened straight forward perspective used by Sheffield and other folk art portraitist | Unsigned, as was typical for Sheffield | Housed in a more modern gold wood frame | Measures 32.50″ H x 25.50 W | Painting has been professionally restored and relined, with some repairs. Little is known about Isaac Sheffield. He was born in Guilford, Connecticut, and was an itinerant Connecticut painter who worked in the 1830s and 1840s. He often worked in New London, which was quite a wealthy town, being the second largest whaling port on the east coast.

        ATTRIBUTED TO ISAAC SHEFFIELD (CT, 1798-1845) Portrait of Woman with gold necklace, oil on canvas, circa 1835, unsigned, as is typical. The lovely unidentified raven haired subject is depicted in black, with blossomed sleeves, lace collar, gold and obsidian jewelry with what is probably a portrait locket. She is seated on a red sofa, with a red swag drape revealing a landscape, possibly New London viewed from Groton across the Thames River. In a vintage deep cove gold molded frame. OS: 35- 1/2" x 30- 1/2", SS: 29- 1/2" x 24- 1/2", cleaned and relined, fine overall craquelure. Born in Guilford, Connecticut, little is known about Isaac Sheffield except that he was an itinerant Connecticut painter who worked in the 1830s and early 1840s. He often worked in New London, which was quite a wealthy town, being the second largest whaling port on the east coast.

Oil on canvas, depicting the gentleman holding a spyglass in one hand with a seascape in the background, his wife holds a letter in her hand inscribed "Mrs. Sarah A. Gray New London, Connecticut US" postmarked "New York Nov. 2," 36 1/2 x 30 in., in original molded mahogany veneer frames. Condition: Captain Gray has minor spots of retouch to jacket and background, Sarah Gray has two small patch repairs, one at center, and one at c.r. with associated retouch, retouch along right edge. Provenance: Purchased at William Fells Poughkeepsie, New York Auction House who bought the contents of the house of Captain and Sarah Gray's granddaughter, Mrs. Burton Easton of Poughkeepsie, New York. Note: Isaac Sheffield was an itinerant Connecticut painter, born in Guilford, Connecticut, and painted in the 1830s and early 1840s, and lived in New London, Connecticut.
