        Attributed to William Henry Shelton (New York, 1840 - 1932) small oil on canvas seascape painting depicting a sailboat under a darkening sky. Initialed "W.H.S." lower left. Painting professionally conserved in 1985, conservator label and information en verso. Housed in a carved rococo giltwood frame. Sight: 8 1/4" H x 11 1/2" W. Framed: 14 1/4" H x 17 1/4" W. Biography (Adapted from The Smithsonian Archives): William Shelton was a painter, etcher, author, printmaker, and illustrator. He worked as an artist-illustrator in New York City, beginning in 1871, for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, Harper's Magazine, Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine and the New York Ledger. He was a member of the artists' colony at Cold Spring Harbor with Stanley Reinhart and Arthur Quartley.

        William Henry Shelton (1840-1932) Etching

        William Henry Shelton (1840-1932) American painter, etcher and illustrator, best remembered for his military art, most specifically his scenes from the American Civil War. W. H. Shelton, in fact, served in a New York State regiment during the conflict and thus his etchings and drawings are based upon actual experiences. He participated as an artillery commander in the Battle of the Wilderness, where he was badly wounded and taken prisoner by the Confederates. As well as producing a number of fine etchings, Shelton also contributed many illustrations to leading periodicals such as Harpers during the 1870s and 1880s. He was a full member of the New York Etching Club and served as the Librarian for the influential New York arts association, the Salmagundi Club. During his career, W. H. Shelton exhibited at such institutions as the Brooklyn Art Association, the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy and at the Art Institute of Chicago. Offered here is his original c. 1883 etching, Artillery Sergeant, image approx. 6-1/2 x 4-1/2 in. plus clean margins. Plate signed. Fine.
