The woman’s face is hollow as part and pieces of her are on the floor. Another figure is seen laying on the floor facing the women. A man is seen standing at the corner as if waiting to be served by the women. Sunny Day is one of Gan Tee Sheng’s most ambitious works, rendering everyday situations into strange fantasies, placing them into unfamiliar or whimsical scenes. Cinematic in its staging, the painting suggests a mysterious narrative containing stylized figures, symbols and objects. Gan Tee Sheng (b. 1984) Green Girl, 2009

The obvious question following the title is, Why green? Green can be jealousy, sickly and conversely, healthy, but in Gan Tee Shengâs early works playing on an absurd comic-tragedy, the characters with their masks need help. There seems to be a tolerated perversity in the disengaged human forms. The quandary is perhaps reflected by the off-white apparition staring vacuously in space not only figuring out what to make of it, but what to do. These are the little dramas running the emotional gamut of fear, repression and desire. This work was first shown in a group exhibition at HOM Art Trans in August 2013, before it made a reprise appearance in the Young Contempo Showcase II exhibition organised by Curate Henry Butcher at Galeri Prima, Kuala Lumpur, in December 2017. The year, 2011, was a banner year for Gan Tee Sheng for he won two of the most highly coveted awards, UOB Painting of the Year and the Malaysian Emerging Artists award, and catapulted him to the cream of young artists. To show that it was no fluke, Gan made history when he clinched the UOB Top Award again in 2013, this time in the Established Artists category. He was a Fukuoka Asian Art Museum artist-in-resident in 2014 besides a six-month residency at HOM Art Trans. He is striding purposefully, obviously outdoor, but where to, maybe for a yamcha (having a drink) with his buddies at his favourite kopitiam, or to buy something, or for a game of mahjong, or he may just be a loner strolling aimlessly and looking at nothing in particular. But in his side profile, he seems a mite testy or is naturally grumpy. Titled Family, this Gan Tee Sheng work is obviously not classified G (General Audiences), not even PG-13, in the movie rating system. Probably ‘Adults Only’. But that is the reality in what sometimes happen within the four walls of a family or families, and the nagging feeling is not helped by the lecherous-looking botak (bald) man in a tie. This is a work from Tee Sheng’s Dark Domestic Drama (DDD), one of the two trajectories of his figuratives, the other dealing on more sober depicting of the forlorn elderly.He had taken part in the Art Expo Malaysia from 2013 to 2016. His international (participation) “cap” is impressive: Fukuoka Asian Museum residency (2014), Art Gwangju 2015, Art Kaoshiung (2015, 2016), Art Stage Singapore and Art Busan (both 2016). And he’s only 33. He made a huge impact in his first solo, Withdrawn, at Taksu Kuala Lumpur, in 2014, on forlorn old people, and his first artist’s residency was the six-month HOM’s Adopted Artist-in-Residence (A-Res). This Dark Domestic Drama (DDD) is part of Gan Tee Sheng’s twin trajectories into Figuratives, the other more sober, dealing with issues of the ageing and such. The artist was struggling to find his way, identity, the purpose of life etc, it was the darker hours during this period of his life.
