Featured in this lot is an Original Signed Craig Sheppard, "In The Shed", a watercolor on paper in a rustic wood frame, signed on bottom left corner. Provenance: the Owen D. Sheppard's works are on display at the John & Geraldine Lilley Museum of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno. Sheppard learned to rope and to ride from his father. As a young man, he was a cowboy and rodeo rider, even riding bulls, and the cowboy mystique was to stick to him for the rest of his life. The Nevada desert was a challenge as well to this painter familiar with the brighter colors of the landscape of the Southwest. Free time away from the university found him exploring the Nevada desert landscape, learning to appreciate and paint its subtle colors, strong contrasts of light and dark, and, most of all, its immensity of space. Watercolor is the medium for which he is most noted and in which he worked exclusively toward the end of his life. A transparent medium, difficult if not impossible to rework or correct, it seemed to suit his temperament. Sheppard applies his style of contrasting colors and light focusing on a stamped with conchos Western saddle hanging in a tack shed. Bright sunshine spotlights the cantle and pommel, the stamped fender, saddle strings and skirt details still clearly visible in the shadows. A horse's bridle hangs above on a post; one can taste the Western lifestyle. The double matted rustic wood frame is striking. Visible art measures 13.25"L x 10.5"W; The frame is 24.5"L x 20.5"W x 1.5"D.*

Two cowboys sit resting against a fallen tree while drinking coffee, the pot on the hot coals while the fire alongside. It doesn't appear the cowboys are in any hurry to get back to work. Unlike other paintings of Nevada mountains or desert scenes, this is focused on an image of a hardworking Western cowboy life. The matted rustic wood frame is striking. Sep. 25, 2015

      "Patience", Watercolor by Craig Sheppard

      Est: $3,000 - $8,000

Craig Sheppard (1913-1978), long-time University of Nevada art professor, painted this beautiful watercolor of a horse tied by the water. From the Knowledge Center at the University of Nevada: "Craig Sheppard, a native of Lawton, Oklahoma, lived in two worlds during his college days. He was a bareback rider in rodeo arenas from Oklahoma to New YorkÍs Madison Square Garden, and an outstanding student in art at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he majored in both painting and sculpture. Prior to coming to the University of Nevada in 1947 to assume the chairmanship of its struggling art department, Sheppard worked as a wartime draftsman at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Tulsa, and as an art instructor at the University of Montana in Bozeman. Sheppard was a versatile artist who was equally at home illustrating books, teaching art history and, on occasion, painting murals. His own easel paintings were stylistically and thematically wide-ranging, from deftly achieved watercolors of western life-horses, riders and requisite ranches and range--to oils that explored enigmatic human figures against equally mystifying landscapes, as exemplified in his ñDead Horseî series painted during a sabbatical leave in Europe. In 1978, during the last year of his life, Sheppard received the Artist of the Decade Award from the Nevada State Council on the Arts." Framed size 32" x 37".
