Very good, reinforcement to inner edge of 2nd and 3rd pages (both of which are blank), not visible from the page which contains letter's text. Pencil notation to upper edge of final blank page. ++ Signed card. 1 7/8" x 3 5/8". Removal evidence on verso, smearing of ink, image side otherwise near fine. ++ John Sherman (1823-1900), brother of William Tecumseh Sherman, served as a Republican member of the House of Representatives from 1855 to 1861, at which time he filled the Senate seat formerly held by Salmon P. Chase. As senator, Sherman played a key role in passage of the Morrill Tariff. After the United States ended payments in gold and silver in 1862, John Sherman was the only Senator to advocate the issuance of paper money and making it legal tender during the bill's debate on the floor of the Senate. Later in his career, while serving as Treasury Secretary under Rutherford B. Hayes, Sherman oversaw the redemption fund for the paper money; the fund, which accumulated $140 million before payments were to be made, was successful largely because the value of paper money had gradually approached the value of specie. Sherman unsuccessfully sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1880, and was reelected to the Senate that same year.
