      Robert Stewart Sherriffs (1906-1960), caricature study of a shady figure in discussion with a lady, signed watercolour, titled to reverse "Sketch May 5. 1937." unframed, 36.5cm x 28.5cm (Robert Sherriffs was asked by Beverley Nicholls to illustrate the 'Woad' series of celebrity profiles that he wrote in "the Sketch" weekly journal. Sheriffs went on to produce regular full-page theatre and film drawings for the magazine. From 1927, he contributed drawings to the Radio Times, he also worked as film caricaturist on Punch from 1948 until 1960.) - Stock Ref:4164-5

It was published by the Illustrated London News Company and was primarily a society magazine with regular features on royalty and the aristocracy, theatre, cinema and art studies. It had a high photographic content with many studies of society ladies and their children as well as regular layouts of point to point racing meetings and other similar events.

      Robert Stewart Sherriffs, British, Illustrator, 1906-1960- "Ivor Novello, 1935"; pen and brush with black and blue ink, heightened with white, signed, inscribed and dated 35, 50x36cm, (unframed) Note: During 1935 Novello was arranging "Glamorous Night" a musical, with book and music by Novello and lyrics by Christopher Hassall, Novello's collaborator in six of the eight Novello musicals staged between 1935 and 1951. Glamorous Night was the first of several Novello musicals in the 1930's given an expensive, spectacular production, with several scene changes and a large cast, including many extras and dancers. Scenes included a London street, the set of an operetta performed in the fictional country of Krasnia, shipboard skating and assassination scenes, the sinking of the ship, a bustling gypsy wedding and a Royal ballroom. The musical was first performed in London in 1935.
