      19th C. Japanese Shimazaki Ryuu Scroll of Benzaiten

      Shimazaki Ryuu (Japanese, 1865-1938), Meiji period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A stunning hand-painted scroll depicting a lovely Benzaiten, a Japanese Buddhist goddess who descended from the Hindu goddess Saraswati, elegantly dressed with a beautiful hairstyle adorned by a decorative crown, sitting atop a rock outcropping emerging from the wavy waters below and playing a biwa (lute), a traditional Japanese string instrument. Created by the artist Shimazaki Ryuu (signature and red seal on lower right) who was particularly skilled in bijinga (the painting of beauties), and was also a professor at the Kawabata Art School, this piece is expertly painted on handmade paper and set against a silk fabric of seafoam green hues and a repeated wave or cloud motif. Comes in a lovely wooden box.
