Adolph Robert Shulz (1869-1963) 12" x 16" oil on board, Brown County Summer Landscape, signed lower right, dated 1920. Recently conserved; recent frame. The following biography is from the fineestateart.com website: Adolph Shulz was born in Delavan, Wisconsin on June 12, 1869. Adolph learned to make rough sketches of the woods and wildlife from his father with whom he spent much time hiking. Shulz studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before heading to the Art Students League of New York to study with William Merritt Chase and Henry Siddons Mowbray. He returned in the summers to Delavan, a popular painting place for the students of John Vanderpoel of Chicago. It was here that he met Ada Shulz and in 1894 they married and traveled to Paris for further study. He studied there at the Academie Julian and Colorossi under LeFebvre, Constant and Laurens. In the spring of 1895 he and Ada moved to Munich, Germany and worked in their own studio. Shortly thereafter they returned, with their new son, Walter, to Delavan to set up a home and studio. Although Adolph had studied portraiture, his love of nature always drew him to landscaping. When he found he could make a living from landscape painting, he spent long hours hiking to the places he had visited with his father. In the early 1900s Shulz began making painting trips to Brown County, Indiana, exploring the hilly terrain by train and buggy. His luminous paintings captured the serene quality of the landscape, earning him designation as leader of the Brown County Art Colony. In 1917, Shulz permanently relocated to Brown County with his family and formed the Brown County Art Association, attracting other gifted Midwestern artists to the area. Shulz’s landscapes featured a soft, delicate palette and expressive, painterly brushwork and met with great critical acclaim in the Midwest. He was a member of the Chicago Galleries Association, the Indiana Artists Club, the Chicago Society of Artists, and the Brown County Art Gallery Association. Shulz divorced in 1926, marrying Alberta Rehm. She was an Indianapolis native who had studied at Indiana University, Butler University, the University of Texas, the John Herron Art Institute and the Ringling School of Art, where Adolph accepted a teaching position in 1934. Adolph Shulz died in Nashville, Indiana, at the age of ninety-three on January 24, 1963. You can see the bio on our site https://fineestateart.com/artists/adolph_robert_shulz
