        Shun'ei, Katsukawa. Der Sumoringer Takasago Uraemon. Nishiki-e Japanischer Farbholzschnitt mit Reliefprägung. Format Oban (ca. 39 x 26 cm). Edo, Kagaya Kichiemon, um 1810. -- Bei dem Seiseidou-Verleger Kagaya Kichibei (1851-1902) gedruckte Darstellung des legendären Sumoringers Takasago Uraemon (gestorben 1829). Er kämpfte unter diesem "Nom de guerre" von 1809 bis 1821, danach nahm er für ein letztes Turnier vor seinem Rücktritt den Namen Tegarayama Shigeemon an. Katsukawa Shun'ei (1762-1819) stellt den Ringer auf diesem (einem von zwei im selben Jahr entstandenen) Porträt um 1810 als Samurai dar, der ein prächiges Katana-Schwert trägt (der andere, ähnliche Schnitt mit 2 Katanas). Eigentlich war das Tragen von Schwertern und Waffen strikt den Samurai vorbehalten. Wenn jedoch Sumoringer in den Dienst von Fürsten traten, so durften auch diese in die Habits der Samurai schlüpfen und Schwerter anlegen. Mehr als ein bloßes Porträt zeigt der Künstler den Ringer Takasago als wichtigen und mächtigen Höfling. – Bildträger (Schöpfpapier) etwas stärker gebräunt, kaum fleckig, jedoch teils mit kleinen Brüchen, die linke obere Ecke abgerissen und hinterlegt. Rand mit kleinen Steghinterlegungen, sonst nur marginale Gebrauchsspuren. Sehr dekoratives, kraftvoll gedrucktes Blatt.

        An expressive color woodblock after Katsukawa Shun'ei (Japanese, 1762-1819), descriptively titled The actor Segawa Kikunojo III as the Dragon Maiden disguised as Osaku in the play Sayo no Nakayama Hiiki no Tsurigane, performed at the Nakamura Theatre in the eleventh month, 1790. The woodblock was created in 1790, this impression created in the 19th century. Nicely presented in a custom frame by Tim Ward. The sheet measures 12 1/2" x 5 3/4", and the frame measures 16 1/2" x 9". Provenance: The Webster House collection.
