Katsukawa Shuntei Sold at Auction Prices

Katsukawa Shuntei I (?? ??) 1770-1824, lived in Kanda Izumicho and went to the Katsugawa school where he learned under Kastugawa Shun'ei. He was a fore runner for a new style of warrior print, illustrating entire battle scenes across all three sheets of an oban-size triptych, a style which influenced future artists like Kuniyoshi.

Formato: ôban verticale (mm 333x230). Firma: Shuntei ga. Editore: la coloritura non consente di leggere il nome dell'editore. Per altro esemplare si veda British Museum inv. 1906,1220,0.190. Il guerriero Egara no Heita, famoso arciere, fu ucciso in battaglia nel 1213, quando aveva trentuno anni e serviva nell'esercito del fratello maggiore di suo padre, Wada no Yoshimori. L'episodio è riferito al giugno 1203, quando accompagnò Minamoto no Yori a caccia e uccise un enorme Uwabami. Nel folklore giapponese l'uwabami è un gigantesco serpente yokai con poteri mutaforma che si ritiene possa inghiottire esseri umani interi. Questa terrificante creatura vive in luoghi remoti e selvaggi dove tende imboscate a tutti i viaggiatori di passaggio. Si dice anche che gli Uwabami siano in grado di controllare gli elementi e causare disastri naturali. In un racconto un enorme serpente si vendicò di essere stato ingannato scatenando tempeste e inondazioni che spazzarono via un intero villaggio. Tuttavia in alcuni casi gli uwabami sono venerati come divinità guardiane e vengono lasciate loro offerte nella speranza che proteggano i luoghi e le persone. (1)

Er war ein Vorreiter eines damals neuen Typs für Kriegerdrucke, wobei sich die Szene der ganzen Schlacht über alle Blätter eines Triptychs erstreckt. Dieser Stil beeinflusste viele spätere Künstler wie beispielsweise Kuniyoshi.
