    18TH C. JAPANESE POEM CARDS, (2) IN ONE FRAME Edo Period 'Uta-garuta' Playing Card Portrait of the 13th c. poet Fujiwara no Shunzei (1114-1204), ink and gouache with gold flecking, having a Waka poem on the portrait card "Ah, this fleeting world, where there is no pathway to release!". The other card reads "From the mountain road whose depths I hope to find quiet, the plaintive geese cry out." In black and gold molded stick frame, OS: 8" x 9 1/2", each card is 2 3/4" x 1 7/8". Fine condition. This is one of his most famous poems. The collection is named "Hyakunin Isshu", which means a single verse by one of a hundred poets. The original poem is found in a large collection called '"Shin Yoshu". Purchased in Kyoto in the 1960s.
