          Alan Shuptrine (Tennessee, b. 1963), "Five O'Clock Shadow," watercolor pastoral painting depicting a flock of sheep grazing on a gentle hill. A tree or building, out of the viewer's sight, casts a shadow over the lower portion of the scene, providing an opportunity for the artist to explore the interplay of light and shadow on and around the sheep. A barn with open door is partially visible in the background, along with other sheep grazing under the shade of a more distant tree. Signed "A. Shuptrine" in red lower right. Shuptrine Fine Art Group printed label en verso with title, medium, dimensions, and quote from the artist: "Each evening at five o'clock, the flock is free to quietly graze in the golden setting sun. How clever they are to know that the shade I stand in is cooler, and the grass juicier." Housed under glass in an artist-made giltwood frame with natural stained top edge, canvas liner, and gilt sight edge. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 28 1/2" W. Framed: 32 7/8" H x 39 7/8" W. Artist biography: The son of acclaimed painter Hubert Shuptrine (Tennessee, 1936-2006) Alan Shuptrine of Lookout Mountain, TN, developed a reputation as a renowned framemaker and water gilder before gaining recognition as a watercolorist. He has continued his father's legacy of depicting the South and Appalachian Mountains in the Realist style of Andrew Wyeth. He was educated at The Baylor School, The University of the South, The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and in Europe and California. Alan Shuptrine's work is frequently framed within his handcrafted water-gilded frames and can be found in the collections of institutions such as the Tennessee State Museum, The Morris Museum of Art, The Huntsville Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, and many more.
