    Feb. 25, 2025

Ben Shute (GA/WI, 1905-1986), St. Simons Island

    Est: $300 - $500

Description: Ben Shute (GA/WI, 1905-1986), St. Simons Island, 1943, Watercolor, signed and dated 1943 upper left, depicting a crowded beachside deck, likely St. Simons Island, GA, matted and framed. Frame size: 28 1/2 in. x 35 1/4 in. Ben Shute was an artist, teacher, arts advocate, and cofounder of the Atlanta College of Art. He received his formal art education from 1922 to 1928 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. From Chicago, Shute set out for Atlanta in 1928 to take a teaching job at the newly established High Museum School of Art. While in Atlanta he established a fine reputation as a portrait artist, but his true strength is evident in the many paintings he did to document his travels. Shutes work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; and the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, New York. Regionally his work has been exhibited and collected by both private collectors and such public institutions as the High Museum and the Columbia Museum of Art in South Carolina. In 1965 and 1969 he and his second wife, artist Keenan Wade Ranson Shute, were given joint exhibitions at the Columbus Museum in Columbus. BEN EDGAR SHUTE (GA. 1905-1986)

    Est: $200 - $400

Watercolor on paper depicting a lone beach house with seagulls perched on the roof and a fishing boat in the water; signed and dated lower right "Ben Shute 80"; under glass in wood frame; sight 23 1/2"W, 17 1/2"H; frame 28 3/4"W, 22 3/4"H--Ben Shute was born in 1905 in Altoona, Wisconsin, and received his formal art education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1928, he moved to Atlanta to teach at the new High Museum School of Art. While there, he and staff developed a dynamic curriculum that resulted in the nationally accredited art school that eventually became the Atlanta College of Art (now absorbed into SCAD). Shute established a reputation as a portrait artist, but his true strength is evident in the many paintings he did to document his travels worldwide. In the early 1950s Shute began his annual visits to coastal Maine where he completed his most well known works in a "shifting cubist perspective". He was awarded the Governor's Award in the Arts for the state of Georgia in 1985. In 2002-2003 the Georgia Museum of Art toured a retrospective
