  • Herbert Sidney (British, 1858-1923) Mrs. Cleveland Greenway's "Rosette Blanche" (Zita), 1904
    Dec. 07, 2022

Herbert Sidney (British, 1858-1923) Mrs. Cleveland Greenway's "Rosette Blanche" (Zita), 1904

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Herbert Sidney (British, 1858-1923) Mrs. Cleveland Greenway's "Rosette Blanche" (Zita), 1904 oil on canvas signed Herbert Sidney, dated, and titled (lower left); pedigree of the dog inscribed (verso) 30 x 20 inches. Property from the Collection of Frances G. Scaife By the end of the nineteenth century, the structures of the pure-bred portrait type had loosened, and more casual portraits of dogs with strong pedigrees had become highly desirable. Herbert Sidney's likeness of Mrs. Greenway's toy poodle Rosette Blanche, for example, captures the elegance of the dog's form, but places her in an informal pose, standing atop a cushion and lady's glove. Despite the hand missing from the glove, the hand of strong breeding is far from absent. On the reverse of the canvas are inscribed not only the dog's formal and informal names, but also her pedigree. Rosette Blanche's parents were both prize-winning poodles, as noted in the pedigree. Her father, Le Roi Blanc, the poodle of Miss Florence Brunker, a prominent figure in poodle shows and breeding, in particular had a strong background and anticipated future. Rosette Blanche continued to be doted upon by Mrs. Greenway, as evidenced by her presentation several years later in 1908 at the costume party of the Poodle Club where she was dressed as a baby in a bassinet surrounded by flowers.

HERBERT SIDNEY (1858-1923) 'Mrs Stuart of Stonehurst', Ardingly - Sussex, signed and dated 1913, also inscribed with title verso, oils on canvas, 90 x 69cm John Stuart made a fortune back in the 1880's, as inventor of Camp Coffee, the blend of chicory and spices that substituted for instant coffee until Nescafe appeared in 1938. He built Stonehurst House in Ardingly in 1889 on the proceeds. He also had the good fortune to marry Mary Ann Rose, in about 1872. She was the widow of Thomas Ross, who owned Ross Optical in London, that traded through to 1949. Ross Optical Company were major manufacturers of precision optical instruments and early associates of Carl Zeiss. Ross was for example, a supplier of lenses and instruments to William H. Fox Talbot, the pioneer of photography. John Stuart became the managing director of Ross Optical after his marriage to Mary Ann and developed the company further. Mary was 73 when this portrait was painted at Ardingly in 1913 by Herbert Sidney, FSA. Herbert Sidney was a well established Victorian painter of portraits and historical subjects. He studied at the RA schools, in Antwerp, and in Paris - under Gerome, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited at the leading London galleries from 1876.
