      Nov. 14, 2024

Franz Xaver Simm: "Die unterbrochene Lektüre"

      Est: €10,000 - €15,000

SIMM, FRANZ XAVER 1853 Vienna - 1918 Munich Title: "Die unterbrochene Lektüre". Date: Ca. 1898/99. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 40.7 x 30cm. Notation: Signed lower right: "F. Simm". Frame: Original, glazed frame. Frame and plate signed and inscribed "München" verso. Marked on the plate "Von links zu beleuchten" ('to be illuminated from the left') and "Vervielfältigung vorbehalten" ('reproduction reserved'). Detailed instructions for inserting the glass and the artist's address on the frame. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Franz Xaver Simm, the talented son of a church and history painter, completed the best possible artistic training. After spending five years learning the basics at the General School of Painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he transferred to the class for history painting under Eduard von Engerth and Anselm Feuerbach. In 1876, Franz Xaver Simm won the Vienna Academy's Rome Prize and, with it, a two-year travelling scholarship. However, he remained in Italy for five years before first completing a commission for large murals in the Caucasian Museum in Tbilisi and then settling permanently in Munich. Franz Simm is extraordinarily versatile, mastering various techniques and all formats. He is a sought-after illustrator (e.g. Hallberger's Goethe edition; Die fliegenden Blätter) and freelance artist who primarily creates detailed and finely painted, gallant scenes. However, he also made a name for himself with large-scale murals (Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna) and dioramas (Leipzig: 'The Interior of a Harem' and 'The Death of Emperor Wilhelm I'). In Munich, he also held a professorship at the Ladies' Academy of the Munich Artists' Association. Franz Simm also enjoyed international success, receiving a medal at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. Works by Franz Xaver Simm are still among the leading museums and collections today. The present painting is one of Simm's typical narrative genre paintings. 'The Interrupted Reading' thrives on the liveliness of the figures and the immediacy of their actions, but also on the grandiose craftsmanship with which Franz Simm depicts individual surfaces. The skilful juxtaposition of the slightly hazy salon atmosphere with brilliantly executed surfaces, such as the lady's white silk dress or the samovar, creates a special charm. In order to emphasise this effect, the artist has indicated on the back of the painting how it should be illuminated. The elaborate, stuccoed frame, which bears the painter's name, combines with the painting to form a complete work of art. Franz Simm painted the Aubusson carpet in the salon so that it appears to be compressed behind the frame and must, therefore, have slight folds. This little trick reinforces the impression that the viewer secretly witnesses this intimate salon scene through the frame's opening. • Franz Xaver Simm: A Young Lady Playing the Harp
      Jun. 02, 2021

Franz Xaver Simm: A Young Lady Playing the Harp

      Est: €20,000 - €25,000

SIMM, FRANZ XAVER 1853 Vienna - 1918 Munich Title: A Young Lady Playing the Harp. Technique: Oil on wood. Measurement: 40,5 x 30cm. Notation: Signed lower left: F. Simm. Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Verso: On the panel adhesive label from the London artists' supply dealer Winsor&Newton. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. As an ensemble with its original and opulent frame, the portrait of a young lady at the harp seems like an open door that draws today's viewer into the Biedermeier era - even if we are actually only looking through a keyhole, as the scene is rather intimate and personal. The elegantly dressed musician, who plays the harp pensively and only for herself - the depiction of a harp as an instrument alone has rarity value in itself - lives in her own world, the only attribute appearing to be the floral still life of the white lilies, which refer to the lilies with which the Mother of God was identified with already in medieval paintings. The chair and the lavishly decorated silk wallpaper suggest her elevated social status. We can understand the harp as a symbol for the inner harmony of the young lady. All this is emblematic of social life when the bourgeoisie created its own idyll in the interior, for which art and culture, architecture and fashion were of immediate importance. Franz Xaver Simm, born in Vienna, studied there with Anselm Feuerbach and, after stays in Rome and Tbilisi, settled in Munich with his wife, who was also a painter. There he quickly made a name for himself with his small-format genre depictions, which were stylistically oriented towards the Empire, this variety of classicism that was influential not only for interior design. The combination of his excellent and detailed painting culture together with the splendid carved gold frame of no lesser quality harmonise and impress in this painting of A Young Lady Playing the Harp in a special way.

Simm, oil on panel, 48 x 34 cm, vertical cracking, framed Exhibited: Große Berliner Kunstausstellung, 1894; Munich Annual Exhibition, 1894. Illustrated in: Die Gartenlaube, Ernst Keil’s Nachfolger, Leipzig 1896, vol. 4, pp. 4–5, no. 20. Catalogued: Friedrich von Boetticher, Malerwerke des 19. Jahrhunderts, Hofheim am Taunus 1979, vol. II, 2, p. 753, no. 32 (The Triumphal Entry of Russian and German Troops into a German City, Winter 1813). In this lot, Franz Xaver Simm takes us back to the Napoleonic era, depicting the victorious return of the German troops as they receive a warm, joyful welcome. The painting was featured in the magazine ‘Gartenlaube’ in 1896 and the accompanying text gives us the impression that the picture made on the public at the time. ‘Here we can see the young mother with her children, the charming sister who has jumped up from her sewing table, still holding her scissors, joyfully welcoming the German regiments as they return. The young son cannot get enough of the splendour of the weapons and all the pomp of the military; he pushes back the curtain with his hand to prevent it from hiding part of this stunning spectacle. Unlike this little patriot, who already bears the hallmarks of a future soldier, and his counterpart, namely his inquisitive older sister, the little girl remains in her mother’s arms; she holds a handkerchief which has been entrusted to her so she can wave to the brave warriors, but her heart is elsewhere, and she is not yet old enough for the shiny buttons and epaulettes to impress her as they usually would; she looks back into the room as if she were seeking recognition from her sister for the skill with which she is waving her victory flag. This group is brightly lit, but a French officer, apparently a wounded prisoner, hides shrouded in darkness, as such soldiers were often accommodated in private apartments when military hospitals were overcrowded. His arm is bandaged, and he listens to the victory march outside in pain and silent surrender.’ (Die Gartenlaube, Ernst Keil’s Nachfolger, Leipzig 1896, vol. 4, pp. 4-5, no. 20)
