The Coronation and Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Simon Stock (1237-1265) receives the Brown Scapular from the Virgin Mary and Christ as a child. A canvas painted on both sides. One tear. Follower of Rubens. The pose of the Virgin Mary is the same as in Rubens' altarpiece for the Cathedral of our lady in Antwerp (canvas, 490 x 325 cm, RKDimages database 58520). Yet the use of colour resembles more to the oil sketch which Rubens made in preparation of the altarpiece (panel, 87.8 x 59.1 cm, The Hague, The Mauritshouse, inv. 926). Looking at the painting here in auction, we see that the Virgin is depicted in an opposite direction. Therefore it is likely the anonymous artist used a print after Rubens' work as an example for this painting. Rubens' Assumptions of the Virgin were translated in copper by Adriaen Lommelin (1618-1673) and Coenraet Waumans (1619-1661). The engraving of Coenraet Waumans, in which he leaves out a large part of Rubens' composition and puts the figure of the Virgin more central, shows the most resemblances with the painting here in auction (ill. 1). On the verso, another religious scene is painted by the same hand: Saint Simon Stock receives the scapular of the Virgin Mary with Christ Child. Simon Stock became a Carmelite in 1237 and later Order General. In this function, he founded several other monasteries in Cambridge, Oxford, Paris and Bologna. In 1251, he experiences an apparition of Mary of Mount Carmel, who gives him a scapular for the salvation of all those who wear it. As in this painting, the scene is usually depicted with a kneeling Simon receiving the scapular from Mary or the Christ Child. He is dressed in the typical orderly attire of the Carmelites with a brown scapular, white cloak and a white hood. It is not clear whether this composition also goes back to an earlier prototype by Rubens. Most of the paintings in Belgian churches with the depiction of Simon Stock, go back to the 18th century. Nevertheless, several 17th-century artists in the circle of Rubens also painted the saint. For example Erasmus Quellinus II (1607-1678) (1686, canvas, 470 x 335 cm, Bruges, Saint Salvator Cathedral, balat.kikirpa.be/object/89923), Gaspar de Crayer (1584-1669) (canvas, 227 x 180 cm, Ghent, MSK, inv. S 22) and Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) (canvas, 197 x 138 cm, Antwerp, KMSKA, inv. 512). Description FR L'Ascension et le Couronnement de la Vierge. 926). 512).
