Simon was born in Germany in 1846 and emigrated with his family to the U.S. two years later, settling in Philadelphia in 1848.

Simon displayed artistic talents early: he entered for study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the fine Arts and exhibited in the Annual Exhibition of 1863, as well as the Philadelphia Centennial of 1876. Simon studied alongside Thomas Eakins at the Academy, specializing in landscapes with animal and sporting scenes. Between 1876 and 1887 Simon exhibited at the Academy, and between 1879 and 1881 he exhibited with the Philadelphia Society of Artists.

Simon’s knowledgeable treatment of trees and his beautiful rendering of the figures in the landscape showcase his exquisite handling of this genre of painting.
