Oil on canvas, Hermann Gustav Simon, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1846-1895), circa 1883. Titled "Double Battery Susquehanna Flats". Image measures 36" x 60". What many consider to be the most important waterfowling scene ever painted. Executed in 1883 by noted Philadelphia artist Herman Simon, the large oil on canvas of two wealthy sportsmen shooting from a double sink box in the Chesapeake Bay, is the only painting of its kind. Likely a commission piece, two gunners covered up in canvasbacks. The Canvasback was king of the Chesapeake at the turn of the century and sink box hunting was so successful that it was eventually outlawed. Never before have we seen a painting that captures this moment in time. Simon’s work was included in numerous prominent exhibitions of the period. He exhibited at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts in 1863 and, again, between 1876 and 1884. His paintings in the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia of 1876 included “Dogs at Quail Shooting” and “Duck Shooting on the Chesapeake Bay”. He exhibited with the Philadelphia Society of Artists from 1879 to 1881 and again in 1884. He also showed at the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1887, his work was displayed at the opening of the new quarters of the Philadelphia Art Club alongside works by Albert Bierstadt and other celebrated artists of the period.

(81.3 x 68.6 x 6.4 cm.) This painting was executed by Hermann Gustave Simon in 1887. Depicting a woman 'tending the garden,' Simon's knowledgeable treatment of trees and beautiful rendering of the figure in the landscapes showcases his exquisite handing of this genre of painting. "Tending the Garden" is signed "H. Simon" and dated in the lower left corner. It measures 16 1/4 x 20 inches. Lined; Slight craquelure visible upper left corner; Slight yellowing to varnish. Under UV, isolated strokes of retouch throughout; Concentrated in upper right corner above tallest bush on right, and in upper left corner. Hermann Gustave Simon (American, 1846-1895) Herman Gustav Simon was born in Germany in 1846. His family immigrated to the United States in 1848. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and specialize in animal, sporting and landscape scenes. Simon first exhibited in the Annual Exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1863, then several times between 1876 and 1887. He also exhibited with the Philadelphia Society of Artists in 1879-81.
