      Chamberlain to the king of Bavaria, and son of 8th Lord Elibank (according to an old label verso) Oil on canvas Signed F. Simoneau and indistinctly dated upper right 112.5 x 87.5 cm. (44 1/4 x 34 1/2 in) Provenance: Mrs F.V.Peel Will Trust; Sale. Christie's, Fine English Pictures , 25th May, 1984, lot 134 (as Circle of John Linnell); Sale. Sotheby s, 14th May, 1986, Lot 202 (as Francois Simoneau); Private collection, Westphalia; Simoneau was a Belgian painter, born in Bornem (province of Antwerp) in 1783, who studied in Paris under Baron Gros. He moved to London in 1815 until his death in 1859. In a 1915 catalogue of Belgian painting held in Brighton, the then Director of Fine Art at the Belgian Ministry of Arts and Sciences wrote that "Three paintings [by Simoneau], up to now unique, preserved at Brussels, increase my desire to see others. They bear a resemblance to the works of Sir Joshua Reynolds or Sir Thomas Lawrence....."
