Alfonso Simonetti, born in Naples in 1840 to Giuseppe Simonetti, a well-known academic painter, and Vincenza Piccirillo, a Neapolitan noblewoman, began his artistic career at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Naples in 1859. He made his official debut in 1862 at the Promotrice Napoletana with the painting "Ettore Fieramosca al monte Gargano." In 1872 he received the title of honorary professor at the Naples Institute of Fine Arts. Among his most significant portraits, Simonetti painted in 1873 that of Giuseppe Verdi and in 1876 that of Claudio Monteverdi. In 1876, he married for the second time Apollonia Abbatecola in Palazzolo Castrocielo, to whom eight children were born. His connection with Castrocielo grew deeper and deeper, and the village inspired many of his most famous works, including "Democratic Conversation," "Via Giuseppe Mancinelli," "Palazzolo Castrocielo," "Andando per acqua," and "Oh! Speranze della terra voi finite in un avello." Simonetti also contributed to the frescoes in the Abbatecola Chapel (1887-1889) in Castrocielo, where some of his personal belongings were kept. Two of his oil paintings, one from about 1888 depicting the martyrdom of St. Lucy and another from about 1885-1890 depicting her after her torture, are still present in the church of St. Lucy dedicated to her. On August 22, 1892, Alfonso Simonetti died in Castrocielo and was buried in the Abbatecola Chapel, leaving a significant artistic legacy related to his connection with the community and his paintings inspired by the places and people of the region.
