    • Alexander Sitnikov, Huge Allegorical Oil Painting 'Bull', 1997
      Nov. 30, 2013

Alexander Sitnikov, Huge Allegorical Oil Painting 'Bull', 1997

      Est: €8,000 - €10,000

Mixed media, oil and paper on canvas Russia, 1997 Alexander Sitnikov (1945) - Russian painter Signed in Cyrillic and dated lower right 'Sitnikov 97' Overall dimensions framed: 144.7 x 145.1 cm Good condition Provenance: from a Berlin private collection A high-contrast work with an allegorical motif, characteristic of the Russian contemporary artist's work; Sitnikov's paintings fetch up to more than 40,000 Euros at international auctions This painting by the Russian painter Alexander Sitnikov was created in 1997 and shows one of the artist's quintessential compositions. The simplified shape of a bull and an abstracted female body are depicted in the contrasting primary colours red and green. Inspired by Greek mythology, the figures may be interpreted as Zeus, in the guise of a bull, and the young Europa. The bull, as a symbol of virility and fertility, is a recurring motif in the artist's oeuvre. Sitnikov is known for his allegorical representations of animals and hybrid creatures, strongly inspired by the symbolic paintings of Chagall. Here, the background also shows the influence of constructivism and futurism: geometric colour fields are complemented with image and text collages. But despite the various sources of inspiration Sitnikov has developed his own style, which is characterized by a powerful interplay of colours and a lively compositional dynamic. The painting by Alexander Sitnikov is in good condition. The back of the bull shows paint flakes and there is a small flaking in the upper left corner. The work is signed in Cyrillic and dated lower right 'Sitnikov 97'. The frame shows the usual signs of age and wear. Framed the work measures 144.7 x 145.1 cm. The stretcher frame measures 130 x 150 cm. Alexander Sitnikov (b. 1945) Alexander Sitnikov was born in the Soviet Union in 1945. Between 1966 and 72 he studied at the Surikov Art Academy in Moscow and in 1875 he was admitted as a member of the USSR Union of Artists. From the late 70s onwards Sitnikov regularly exhibits at home and abroad. His oeuvre is defined by allegorical and mythological motifs and a contrasting colour scheme. His works are in the collections of the Pushkin Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Ludwig Museum in Aachen and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. Alexander Sitnikov lives and works in Moscow.

      ALEXANDER SITNIKOV

      Est: $40,000 - $60,000

PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION RUSSIAN, B.1945 SHOSTAKOVICH measurements 56 by 67 3/4 in. alternate measurements 142 by 172 cm signed and inscribed in Cyrillic and dated 85 (on the reverse) oil on canvas NOTE Alexander Sitnikov's work as a visual artist reflects his deep musical inspiration. Although his medium is oil on canvas, in works such as "Concerto" (1998) and "Schnittke" (2000), Sitnikov's color is sound. Especially inspired by the controversial Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, Sitnikov has devoted several paintings and exhibits to the composer, including his 1984 exhibit in Duisburg Germany, "Shostakovich and his Time" and the 1996 exhibit at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, "In Memory of Shostakovich." In the present painting, 'Shostakovich" (1985), Sitnikov's painting style parallels Shostakovich's music. Slashes of color and soaring streams of light suggest a nearness to the cosmos. Shostakovich, and the viewer, reach away from the mortal ugliness that cowers below the music. Sitnikov uses color in its most pure form, offering a sense of the absolute truth put forth by Shostakovich's music. Sitnikov's trademark geometrical rigidity gives way to swirling chaos, a paradox seen often in Shostakovich's sound, specifically in Piano Trio No. 2. The stiffness of Sitnikov's shapes explodes with an unusual fluidity analogous to the restrained robotic gravity in Trio No. 2, which eventually leads to a panicked sense of chaos. Perhaps Sitnikov felt a comraderie with Shostakovich that reached beyond their interest in art. Shostakovich's own artistic life is blanketed in controversy and academic dispute. To some scholars, Shostakovich was a mediocre composer who created music that would satisfy the Party. To others, Shostakovich was a brave dissident, his music a code full of anti-Party messages and truth. Sitnikov paints this second Shostakovich--a Shostakovich who creates music as a means towards truth--a Shostakovich that is a medium to the sublime.
