Red Skelton Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1913 - d. 1997

While Richard (Red) Skelton's name is often associated with comedy, thinking of artist Red Skelton only as a comedian does him a grave injustice. Skelton was a prolific painter, photographer, author, and composer, who began drawing when he was five years old. Red Skelton's paintings are most notably of clowns, including some characters he portrayed, although he also created still lifes and landscapes. Skelton turned to prints when he realized the demand for his work far exceeded his output. He hand-signed the prints once he had ascertained they were of the highest quality. Whether on paper or canvas, his prints remain some of artist Red Skelton's most sought-after pieces.

Red Skelton prints' value has steadily increased since his passing in 1997, as has the value of his original works. Fans of Skelton's work can find other vintage and contemporary portrait prints by many artists through online auctions and sales.

Red Skelton's Screen Worn Pair of Colt Second Generation Single Action Army Revolvers with Steer Head Carved Pearl Grips and Silver Mounted Arvo Ojala Holster Rig with Documentation -A) Colt Single Action Army Revolver Red Skelton's Screen Worn Pair of Colt Second Generation Single Action Army Revolvers with Steer Head Carved Pearl Grips and Silver Mounted Arvo Ojala Holster Rig with Documentation -A) Colt Single Action Army Revolver This iconic pair of Colt Single Action Army revolvers and their Arvo Ojala silver mounted holster rig are accompanied by a handwritten certificate of authenticity signed by Richard "Red" Skelton's wife, Lothian Skelton, on August 29, 2013, confirming the "hand guns were personally owned and cherished by Red Skelton." It lists them by serial number, confirms the grips, and states that they included a custom black leather rig with silver trim. Skelton was and is a beloved American entertainer and is best known for "The Red Skelton Show." This pair and the holster rig are featured in Season 11 of the show in Episode 4: "Dead Eye & the Gun Slinger" from October 17, 1961. For 17 of the 20 years the show ran, it was in the top ten highest rated programs on television. Skelton was also cast in many comedic films. Among his most popular films are "The Fuller Brush Man," "The Yellow Cab Man," "A Southern Yankee," and "Lady Be Good." He started his career as a live performer and remained a talented stage performer throughout his life. He was also an excellent painter and was known for his clown paintings. He received numerous awards over the years and is part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Both of these revolvers were manufactured in 1960 and are fitted with pearl grips with the right grip of "A" carved with a steer head and the left grip of "B" carved with the same so that the carving shows when the revolvers are holsters. Both revolvers have the standard markings and features including matching serial numbers. Interestingly, the back straps were swapped from one gun to the other so gun A's back strap is numbered to gun B, and vice versa. A black leather rig by Arvo Ojala of Hollywood, California, complete with two holsters and a cartridge belt is included. The strap tip and buckle are silver and are engraved with detailed scrollwork. Ojala began making quick draw holsters in the early 1950s and became an important technical advisor in the mid-20th century teaching actors how to shoot and quick draw at impressive speeds. He also appeared in westerns, including most famously in the opening sequence of "Gunsmoke" as the man shot by Marshal Matt Dillon. RED SKELTON, AMERICAN (1913 - 1997) Richard Bernard "Red" Skelton was an American entertainer best known for being a national radio and television comedian between 1937 and 1971. Skelton, who has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, began his show business career in his teens as a circus clown and continued on vaudeville and Broadway and in films, radio, TV, nightclubs, and casinos, all while he pursued an entirely separate career as an artist. A vaudeville and burlesque performer who worked his way up from the bottom of the rung clubs and show boats to play the Paramount Theatre in NYC, Red Skelton entered films in 1938 and went on to appear in some two dozen musicals and comedies through the 1940s, mostly for MGM. Skelton, who had his own radio show from 1941-53, embraced TV in 1950 and gained his greatest fame there, showcasing his gift for pantomime and his memorable characterizations, such as Freddy the Freeloader, on the long-running "The Red Skelton Show" which ran on NBC from 1951-53, then on CBS from 1953-70, and finally on NBC for its last year 1970-71. Skelton began producing artwork in 1943, but kept his works private for many years. He said he was inspired to try his hand at painting after visiting a large Chicago department store that had various paintings on display. His wife, Georgia, a former art student, persuaded Skelton to have his first public showing of his work in 1964 at the Las Vegas hotel where he was entertaining at the time. Skelton originals and lithograph are collected world wide.
