ANTONÍN SLAVÍČEK 1870 - 1910 - THE COURT OF THE AMBITUS OF THE ST. AGNES CONVENT

        Est: -

From the expert opinion of Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc: "The view from the courtyard of St. Agnes Monastery is shown on the eastern and southern arm of its cloister with the adjacent belfry, as it looked in 1908, when the monastery was to be demolished in the Prague sanitation program. After its abolition by decree, the monastery was Josef Il. transformed into a poorhouse and the ambit walled into small apartments. The massive wall supports are Baroque. In the 19th century, passageways leading to the VItava embankment were cut through. All this disappeared during the modern monumental reconstruction of the monastery. The painting is therefore a unique document of the state of this monastery at that time important Prague monuments. The location was confirmed by PhDr H.Soukupová. In 1908, Antonín Slavíček also created a remarkable panorama of the view of Prague from Letná, which is one of the highlights of his work. The painting in question also belongs to masterful examples in the concept of color, perfectly interpreting the moving story of St. Agnes Monastery with even emotional fervor." Another opinion is attached to the work - by PhDr. Jana Orlíková. Technique: oil on cardboard, Signed: sign. lower right: A. Slavíček 1908

Slavíček's wife Míla, nee. Brynychová, whom he married in 1895, appears repeatedly in his paintings, usually as a stagecoach. The present drawing is a distinctive portrait, showing her from behind and with a gesture vaguely reminiscent of playing the piano. The concise and convincing execution, together with the novel concept of the likeness, makes the offered drawing a work of exceptional quality, unique in the artist's oeuvre. Est: -

From the opinion of Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlicha CSc: "On a grassy hill, leafy trees and bushes stand out against a cloudless sky. To the left and right, the roofs of rural buildings. Closer to the viewer, on the left and right, there are isolated boulders, a large log rests on the smaller one on the left. Authenticating annotations on the back of the painting agree that it is an early work by Antonín Slavíček from around 1895. Slavíček's authorship can be confirmed with the fact that the mentioned dating needs to be corrected. He painted in the vicinity of St. Boleslav and in Polabí around 1890. This dating also corresponds to the artistic conception of the painting. We can already recognize Slavíček's spirited handwriting in it, but in terms of color it still belongs to the period when the painter finished the surface of the painting with a gray tone, which was also reflected in the darkening of the dominant green color. It is a quality work of Slavíček's young art." The verso is credited with the authentification of the son of Jan Slavíček and V. Beneš. Technique: Oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: Unsigned

        ANTONÍN SLAVÍČEK 1870 - 1910 - LANDSCAPE NEAR KAMENIČKY

        Est: -

From the expert opinion of Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc: "A distant view of a gentle bare hill with a transverse entrance and a path, to the left a yellow field with a flock of geese. The sketches and studies are used by artists to obtain building blocks for large canvases in which they humanize nature, where they are fascinated by the motif of the driveway subordinate to the whole image, which is built using simple colored chords. yellow and blue, green and purple and white and black. The shadows in the landscape suggest that it is probably an autumn landscape. The painter seems to illustrate what he wrote in 1903, after moving to Kameničky, A. Gollová: "Even the sun shines on the long hills - it seems to me to shine gloomily. Everything is drowning in the red light, but it's kind of numb and motionless, without joy. They are strange mountain regions." During the sensitive restoration of the painting, interesting pencil notes were discovered on the non-visible side of the supporting frame, proving that the supporting frame was first used as a model for local carpenter Ferdinand Sokol to make about five or seven other blind frames, which he has "to send to the parish in Kameničky with a bill".Slavíček is known to be friends and corresponded with the parish priest Jan Selichar from Kameničkov, so this address is also completely trustworthy. " The ascending path, on which human staff then begins to appear, human destiny in the confrontational connection of the earth and the cloudy sky will become a focal point of his very mature landscape paintings. Antonin Slaviček (Czech, 1870-1910) Landscape, 1897 oil on canvas laid to board signed A. Slaviček and dated (lower right) 14 x 19 ½ inches. We would like to thank Dr. Sarka Leubnerova for her assistance with the cataloging of this lot. This work was created during the artist's studies at the Prague Academy in the studio of Professor Julius Marak, when they painted en plein air around Prague. Slavicek worked on similar themes several times during this period, including Poppy and Summer, also both from 1897. The artist's manuscript likewise corresponds to his work from that time.

        ANTONÍN SLAVÍČEK 1870 - 1910 - SUMMER

        Est: -

From the expert assessment by Prof. PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc: "Under a cloudy sky, a dirt road rises diagonally to the left on a grassy hill. Behind its top on the right is a dark green shrub and a view of a distant flat horizon. The picture was painted in the summer of 1897 near Okoř, where Slavíček was used to paint in Mařák's landscape school of the Academy of Fine Arts. It is one of the "simple motifs" that the young painter began to choose under the influence of his older colleague F. Kaván, with the fact that he compensated for the simplicity of the subject by fine processing of details. Cleverly it combines his greens with reddish tufts of grass around the road and symphonies of white flowers, mixed with several invigorating accents of red poppies. Significant is also Slavíček's ability to maintain rich detail in the whole image and conceive it as traditionally focused only on the picturesque part, but rather this is a modern optics in the perception of the landscape, which Slavíček has transformed the traditional genre of intimate landscape painting into a tangible high art. It is important that for the first time the motif of a field path ascending a hill appears here, which will become the main theme of Slavíček's mature landscape painting. It will be repeated in many variants as a modern symbol, expressing the motif of the ascending path, on which human staffage, human fate in the confrontational connection of the earth and the cloudy sky will begin to appear. Slavíček probably appreciated this painting because he exhibited it twice in Vienna (1897 in the Kunstlerhaus and in 1901 in the Miethke Gallery) and reproduced it in Free Directions in 1899. " Landscape painting Summer comes from the collection of the architect Jan Kotěra. Many works in the collection are already part of famous museum collections. The painting Summer was last seen at Slavíček's comprehensive exhibition in the Prague Castle Riding Hall in 1961. It was not in public sight until more than 60 years later, and is undoubtedly a work from Slavíček's best artistic period that brings brightness, energy and the familiar theme of a sunny road in the fields.
