    Aug. 28, 2015

Stipple engraving “Conjugal Affection”, by Robert Smirke, 1799

    Est: €100 - €480

Stipple engraving on paper England, 1799 Painted and drawn by Robert Smirke (1752-1845) - English painter and drawer Engraved by Robert Thew (1758-1802) - English engraver With dedications to Their Majesties Framed, behind glass Very beautiful frame of the 19th century Overall dimensions, framed: 56.5 x 74 cm Estimate by Auctionata Expert: 480 EUR This fine stipple engraving has been done after the famous painting “Conjugal Affection” (today in the Guildhall, London) by the English artist Robert Smirke. It shows a part of the royal family, consisting of King George III, his wife Queen Charlotte and four of their altogether fifteen children. The young man to the right is presumably the heir to the throne, George IV. The Queen is shown doing some needlework while she is surrounded by the children and the family pets. The whole family seems very close, except maybe for the young, rather melancholy seeming young man who stares through the window at the harbor in the distance. The engraving itself is in good condition, yet the paper is somewhat browned and there are a few water stains on the lower border. The overall dimensions, framed are 56.5 x 74 cm, the dimensions of the printing plate are 49.5 x 63 cm. The stipple engraving is inscribed several times „Painted by Robυt. Smirke R. A.” and“Engraved by Robυt. Thew. Hist. Engraver to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales”.There is an additinal dedication below that reads: “TO THEIR MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTIES KING GEORGE III. & QUEEN CHARLOTTE. This Print is most humbly Dedicated by their most Dutiful and Loyal Subject JNυo. BOYDELL.”and a few other inscriptions. Robert Smirke (1752-1845) Robert Smirke was born as the son of a travelling artist and was brought to London by his father in 1766, and apprenticed to a coach-painter. In 1772 he became a student of the Royal Academy and became a member of the Academy in 1791. His paintings are often rather small and monochrome and show great proximity to drawings which made them perfect for being multiplied as prints. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
