      CHARLES L. SMITH (PA, 1913-1968) "Anticipation", India ink on paper, depicting two black men throwing dice, signed and titled on remnants of original mat, also titled on back of paper, also marked on back "Robert Carlen Gallery, 323 S. 16th St., Phila." and "Wharton Settlement". Carlen (1906-1990) founded his Gallery in 1937, in Philadelphia, dealing in American Folk Art and Primitives, closing ion 1997. The "Wharton Centre" was founded in early 20th c. at 22nd St & Columbia Ave in Philadelphia as a home for indigent blacks, Smith lived there during the Depression. Unframed, in folio, 6" x 11" sheet, glued to mat, could soak off and clean. Possibly an illustration. From a Camden, ME Estate.
