          Zane Grey "The Call Of The Canyon" Book Illustrated by Lilian Wilhelm Smith. Features a watercolor on the front page hand painted and signed by Lillian Wilhelm Smith. Artist Lillian Wilhelm Smith (1882-1971) spent most of her life in Arizona, painting the people and places of the region. She first visited Arizona in 1913 with author Zane Grey (1872-1939), a cousin by marriage, to illustrate his western themed books. After a period of return visits, during which she became inspired by the people and landscapes of Arizona, she decided to move permanently to the state in 1916. Smith illustrated a number of books for Zane Grey which include the following novels: The Border Legion, The Last Trail, Under the Tonto Rim, The Call of the Canyon, Wild Horse Mesa, The Rainbow Trail.           Hand-braided riata/ lariat, nearly 50' long, accompanied by letter from Lee McReynolds stating the lariat was purchased in 1962 from Lillian Wilhelm Smith (American, 1882-1971), who had received it from Western novelist Zane Grey (American, 1872-1939) when he closed his cabin near Payson, Arizona *Note: Lillian Wilhelm Smith was a cousin by marriage to Zane Grey, and first visited Arizona in 1913 to illustrate Grey's western-themed books, later deciding to move permanently to the state in 1916.
