This striking corrugated jar is designed with incised op-art geometric patterns throughout the entirety of the work. Signed on the bottom "to the glory of God! / Richard Zane Smith / 94." Richard Zane Smith was born in Georgia and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, he is an enrolled member of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas. He has a degree from the Kansas City Art Institute, where he studied ceramics. As a young man, he taught at a Navajo mission school, where he was exposed to native clay and Ancient Pueblo pottery. Richard Zane Smith's works can be found in museums nationwide and featured in numerous exhibits, including the Heard Museum's exhibit, "Breaking the Surface," the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the San Diego Museum of Man, and the Denver Art Museum.         Early Richard Zane Smith (Born 1955) 1983 Etched Pictorial Pot. This piece is a combination of a transitional black and redware coloring, featuring sgraffito etching designed along the upper portion of the jar. Images depicts an impoverished native land in a desert filled with small mobile homes, wild animals, hogans, cars sitting on blocks, and litter such as liquor bottles and tires scattered across the ground.
