      SMITH WILLIAM H.: (1825-1891) English Bookseller and Newsagent, son of W. H. Smith. Smith expanded the firm and introduced the practice of selling books and newspapers at railway stations. A.L.S., W. H. Smith, two pages, 8vo, London, 25th June 1887, to W. D. Mackenzie. Smith enquires 'If it is in your power to help me with a carriage on Friday for the Prince of Wales and his party I shall be very much obliged to you' and continues 'The visit will be a private one, and no public ceremonial is to be allowed'. With blank integral leaf. Together with a second A.L.S., W. H. Smith, two pages, 8vo, Henley on Thames, 26th June 1887, also to W. D. Mackenzie. Smith states that he is obliged to his correspondent for the carriages and for the offer of the use of the Temple which he shall convey to the Prince of Wales, although adding 'I am under the impression he will prefer to remain in the steam launch as the Princess is not very quick in moving to and from boats'. With blank integral leaf. Both letters are accompanied by the original envelopes hand addressed by Smith and signed by him in the lower left corners. VG, 2 €100-125
