    Smith, William Harold (American, 1900 - 1982), Cubist Nude, 1951, oil on canvas, 32 x 26 inches, signed and dated lower right and signed on canvas reverse, framed in the artist's flat panel frame measuring 35 x 29 inches, William Harold Smith was born in 1900 in Casselton, North Dakota. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Washington and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. A former student of famous artist Alexander Archipenko whose influence can be seen in this painting, Smith taught at the University of Oklahoma, where he was Professor Emeritus of Art.

(chair) PROVENANCE: This settee and two chairs are part of a large suite ordered by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia in November of 1875 from William Smith and Richard R. Campion, furniture manufacturers and upholsterers located at S. Third Street in Philadelphia. The suite of chairs was in use at the Society for more than a century. A settee and two chairs from the original suite have been retained for the Society's collection.
