Ink on paper USA, 1961 Robert Smithson (1938-1973) – American conceptual and earthwork artist Signed and dated by the artist along the lower recto edge Provenance: Private Collection, New York Dimensions: 17 ¾ x 23 7/8 in. (45.1 x 60.6 cm) Robert Smithson is best known for his earth works and land art and his famously madeSpiral Jetty (1970) a promontory work built out from the Rozel Point peninsula on the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake in the state of Utah. This work on paper comes from an earlier time in the artist’s career when he was influenced by the Pop art movement. It closely resembles the graphic design ink drawings from the 1950s by Andy Warhol. A very rare pen ink drawing on paper, signed and dated within the image. Robert Smithson (American, 1938-1973) Smithson began as an artist living in New York and studying at the Brooklyn Museum School during the 1950s. He met and married sculptor Nancy Holt before becoming a key figure in the development of Land Art. While he is most well-known for his man-made geographical formations including the Spiral Jetty (1970) located on the Great Salt Lake, he continued to work in various media including photography until his death in a plane crash in 1973. He dubbed his massive alterations, both inspired by nature and reactive to it- earthworks. Condition In overall good condition, with paper toning margins, recto. Robert Smithson, Untitled Ink on Paper, USA, 1961

        Est: $5,000 - $6,500

Ink on paper USA, 1961 Robert Smithson (1938-1973) – American conceptual and earthwork artist Signed and dated by the artist along the lower recto edge Dimensions: 17 ¾ x 23 7/8 in. (45.1 x 60.6 cm) Estimate: $10,000-$15,000 Robert Smithson is best known for his earth works and land art and his famously madeSpiral Jetty (1970) a promontory work built out from the Rozel Point peninsula on the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake in the state of Utah. Condition With light staining along far recto margins from past matting. Faint soiling mark along the left recto margin. Occasional mild toning to the surface not affecting the quality of the image. In overall good condition. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
