Henry Bayley Snell (1858 - 1943) Oil on canvasboard, Signed Lower Left, measures (11 x 16 inches) w/frame (18 x 22 inches) Henry Bayley Snell was a well-known American impressionist painter from New Hope, Pennsylvania. He was born in England and emigrated to the United States, settling in New York City in 1875 at the age of 17. While studying art, he supported himself working for an engineering firm and a lithography studio. Snell married the artist, Florence Francis in 1888 and began painting in New Hope in 1900, and later moved there around 1926. Snell is associated with the New Hope Impressionist School. He painted on many trips to Europe and India, and is especially noted for his coastal scenes of Cornwall, England. He also painted harbor scenes of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where he co-founded a second art school/colony in 1921 along with Frank Leonard Allen called Boothbay Studios. This school was described in its brochures as a Summer School of Industrial, Normal, and Fine Art, by 1924 the school occupied six buildings along the shore on Boothbay Harbor's east side.

Exhibited "One Hundred and Thirty-Third Annual Exhibition," Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 30-March 6, 1938, no. 252. Literature Dr. Thomas C. Folk, The Pennsylvania Impressionists, Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, Madison, New Jersey and Associated University Press, London, 1997, p. 95 (illustrated). The relined canvas in overall good condition. With hairline craquelure at top and bottom. While the bottom part is stabilized for the most part, we see active flaking at upper center (in the smoke) as well as at upper right along the top outer edge, and at upper left. With abrasions along the top outer edge in general too. Examination under UV light reveals scattered areas of inpainting at upper center in the cloud as well at upper right along the top outer edge of the canvas. Judging from their shape and pattern, such areas appear to be old inpainted flakes, which is consistent with the aforementioned craquelure issue. See Specialist's pictures for more details. In overall good condition, with slight vertical craquelure throughout, especially visible in the sky along the top outer edge. Some others at center right on the rocks and at center left in the water. With some ripples in the canvas at bottom left (most likely from the work being laid down). Examination under UV light reveals remnants of old glowing varnish throughout (at bottom left, bottom right, center right and sporadically in the sky). Minor pinpoint restoration at bottom center in the rocks. Otherwise untouched.
