OSCAR DANIEL SOELLNER AMERICAN, GRAND DETOUR, ILLINOIS, 1890-1952 WASH DAY Oil on canvas Verso Estate Stamp: Estate of OSCAR D. SOELLNER #175 Catalogue note: Oscar Soellner was born in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute. He lived in the suburb of Oak Park and exhibited annually at the Art Institute. Soellner was a founding member of the Grand Detour, Illinois artist colony, where he painted every summer. The artist is an important American regionalist. His poetic landscapes emphasize the abstract forms found in nature and his canvases often recall those great painters of the French Barbizon School: Daubigny and Corot, yet have a thoroughly American flavor.

He divided his time between that of a commercial artist in the city and a more rustic and fulfilling life in the country. He and his family spent many summers and vacations in the artist's colony of Grand Detour, Illinois, where he enjoyed painting in the outdoors. He exhibited in Chicago and her environs, including a long run at the Annual Exhibition by Artists of Chicago off and on from 1923 until 1950. His greatest achievement was the exhibition of his painting, "A House at Grand Detour," in the annual exhibition of the National Academy of Design in 1929.
