(1805 Berlin - 1867 Köln) Umkreis "Die beiden Schwestern" (auch betitelt "Die beiden Geschwister"). Originaltitel Doppelbildnis eines dunkelhaarigen und eines blonden Mädchens, innig vertraut nebeneinander vor einer italienischen Küstenlandschaft sitzend, inspiriert durch die literarische Vorlage der beiden "Leonoren" (Leonore von Este und Leonore Sanvitale) aus Goethes Schauspiel "Torquato Tasso". Fein lasierend gemalte Darstellung nach dem bekannten Gemälde Sohns, das er 1842 in der Ausstellung der Berliner Akademie zeigte und welches kurz nach seiner Entstehung auch in einer Lithographie von C. Wildt populär wurde. Bereits 1834-1836 hatte Sohn das thematisch und motivisch vergleichbare Schwesternbildnis "Die beiden Leonoren" mit ähnlichem Landschaftshintergrund gemalt. Der seit 1867 in Düsseldorf ansässige Maler lehrte ab 1832 an der Akademie und wurde 1838 dort zum Professor ernannt; zugleich nahm ihn 1833 die Berliner Akademie als Mitglied auf. No. 1358; Sold March 1943 to Carl Knaisch, Bad Godesberg-Bonn; His heirs - private collection, Germany. The present lot is widely regarded in the literature as Carl Ferdinand Sohn’s most beautiful portrait; however, the identity of the sitter remains unknown. Our mysterious lady belonged to the German aristocratic family von Monts de Mazin and is depicted wearing a Renaissance-like costume in front of an idealised landscape. Sohn’s masterful talent for reproducing materiality can be appreciated in the softness of her skin and the lustre of her fashionable hair. After starting his career as a painter of historical works with medium success, Sohn quickly turned to portrait painting enjoying enormous popularity specially among women of the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy, travelling as far as Russia and the United States to fulfil his commissions.

The subject of the two Leonores (Eleonore d'Este and Countess Eleonore San Vitale) from Goethe's "Torquato Tasso" was one of the most successful motifs in Carl Ferdinand Sohn's oeuvre. The initial version of this subject is today kept in the LVR-Museum in Bonn, and a second version comissioned by Count Athanasius von Raczynski which differs primarily in the treatment of the landscape background and balcony is kept in the national museum in Poznan (Posen). A slightly later version combining the two Leonores with figure of the poet Tasso is kept in the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf.The present work is based on Sohn's first version painted in 1834, which was in turn inspired by Overbeck's famous painting "Italia und Germania" - which represented one of the key works of German Romanticism and strongly influenced the Düsseldorf school. Carl Ferdinand Sohn, who followed his tutor Wilhelm von Schadow from Berlin to the Rhineland, was one of the first generation of artists of this school.

Hylas war der junge und sehr schöne Freund und Waffenträger des Herakles und wurde von diesem an der Küste von Mysien getrennt, als er beim Wasserholen von Nymphen in einen Quellteich gezogen wurde. In Berlin studierte der junge Künstler Carl Ferdinand Sohn u.a. bei Wilhelm von Schadow. Als dieser an die Kunstakademie Düsseldorf ging, folgte C. F. Sohn ihm, zusammen mit weiteren Mitschülern begleitete er den einflussreichen Lehrer. Sohns Werk aus der Zeit beschäftigt sich vornehmlich mit der Antiken-Thematik aber auch Figuren der Literatur werden von ihm dargestellt. Das hier präsentierte Werk zeigt den Raub des Hylas durch die Nymphen, einem beliebten Thema des 19. Jh., auch von anderen namhaften Künstlern wie z.B. Joseph Anton Koch oder William Edward Frost, gewählt.
