YAMAGUCHI SOKEN: PEACOCK PERCHED ON ROCKS Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818), signed Soken with seal Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Color woodblock print on silk, mounted as a hanging scroll, with ivory handles. Signed Soken with seal; publisher Shimbe Shoin. Titled Peacock Perched on Rocks. Based on a painting of a peacock by Yamaguchi Soken, the bird perched atop a rocky outcropping, peering over the edge, its colorful tail falling over one side. The feathers are beautifully colored and detailed, and the rock rendered with a few deft brush strokes. The scene is framed by a cluster of bamboo on the upper right and delicate flowers below. SIZE of the sheet 37.5 x 15.4 cm, SIZE incl. frame 131.5 x 30.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, slight creasing, and minuscule soiling. Important notice: Please note that we will need to remove the ivory roller ends before shipping / handing over the item. The roller ends are not part of this offer. With a fitted wood box. Museum comparison: A closely related print is in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, accession number 1955-39-2.

Formerly from a European private collection - Few minor foxing spots, framed with passe-partout and glazed Yamaguchi Soken was a Japanese painter of the Maruyama Shijō school during the mid to late Edo period. Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818) Yamaguchi Soken was a renowned Japanese painter and poet, specializing in delicate landscapes and flowers.
