      YAMAGUCHI SOKEN: PEACOCK PERCHED ON ROCKS Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818), signed Soken with seal Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Color woodblock print on silk, mounted as a hanging scroll, with ivory handles. Signed Soken with seal; publisher Shimbe Shoin. Titled Peacock Perched on Rocks. Based on a painting of a peacock by Yamaguchi Soken, the bird perched atop a rocky outcropping, peering over the edge, its colorful tail falling over one side. The feathers are beautifully colored and detailed, and the rock rendered with a few deft brush strokes. The scene is framed by a cluster of bamboo on the upper right and delicate flowers below. SIZE of the sheet 37.5 x 15.4 cm, SIZE incl. frame 131.5 x 30.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, slight creasing, and minuscule soiling. Important notice: Please note that we will need to remove the ivory roller ends before shipping / handing over the item. The roller ends are not part of this offer. With a fitted wood box. Museum comparison: A closely related print is in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, accession number 1955-39-2.

Signature: Soken giga (Painted informally by Soken), an artist's seal: Yamaguchi. Calligraphy inscription. Formerly from a European private collection - Few minor foxing spots, framed with passe-partout and glazed Yamaguchi Soken was a Japanese painter of the Maruyama Shijō school during the mid to late Edo period. He was one of the "Ten Important Under Maruyama". Yamaguchi studied under Maruyama Ōkyo and then specialized in paintings of beautiful women Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818) attr. Backed with paper. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired in the 1990s at Galerie Zacke, Vienna. Old Galerie Zacke label inside the passepartout. Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818) Yamaguchi Soken was a renowned Japanese painter and poet, specializing in delicate landscapes and flowers. His works were characterized by refined composition and subdued colors, and he was also a skilled calligrapher.
