The composition before which we find ourselves follows the models of the "Vánitas" popularized by the Flemish masters from the end of the 13th century until the end of the Baroque in the 18th century and which spread throughout Europe symbolizing the transience of life. The composition before which we find ourselves represents a so-called "Vánitas de Escritor" signed and dedicated to Federico García Lorca (Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, June 5, 1898 - road from Víznar to Alfacar, Granada, August 18, 1936) is observed a writer's skull with its characteristic hat and, on a book, it is flanked by a pipe, a cane and gloves. Oil on canvas Based on the sculpture by Agapit Vallmitjana Abarca (1883), also known as "The African", of which there are different versions, the best known being the one kept in Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona. With double signature: "José Solana" and "José G. Solana". On the reverse, stamped "Círculo de Bellas Artes. Catalogación de la obra de José G. Solana 1959: Serie 5/4. Número 4". There is a tear on the canvas and defects on the paint layer. 78 x 56 cm; 90 x 67.5 cm (frame).

Oil on canvas. Signed. On the back, the number 1981 on the stretcher and on the canvas, stamped with the register of Círculo de Bellas Artes. Together with another canvas we offer in this same auction, these are two additions to Gutiérrez Solana's early production, which is still little known today. In this case, the colours, brushstrokes and female features fit in with other works by this artist from the same period, at the beginning of the 20th century. Provenance: private collection, Barcelona; private collection, Palma de Mallorca. This work comes from the same collection as another lot by Gutiérrez Solana offered in this auction. Relined, with a layer of soil and patches on the reverse. 105 x 72 cm; 116.5 x 84 cm (frame).
