RIGOBERTO SOLER PÉREZ (Alcoy, Alicante, 1896 - Valencia, 1968). "Gypsies". Oil on canvas. It has restorations and repainting on the pictorial surface. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 97 x 84 cm; 117 x 103 cm (frame). This work, which belongs to the period when the artist lived in Barcelona, shows us two young women with dark hair and round and voluptuous features, immortalising one of the ideals of beauty that were a product of romanticism. The gypsy woman as a symbol of sensuality and even exoticism became a recurring theme in 19th-century painting. In this particular case, the two young women are shown in complicity with each other, portrayed in an exterior with a rapid, pictorialist brushstroke that gives the scene an idyllic component of the portrait of the society of the time. This type of work was very common and appreciated in Spanish art from the 19th century until well into the 20th century. The style was the creation of popular patterns portrayed through a pictorial vision of a friendly character, where the author is influenced by a romantic aesthetic and heritage, developed during the second half of the 19th century. Rigoberto Soler trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia. In 1924 he settled in the Ibizan town of Santa Eulàlia des Riu, where he remained for more than thirty years, until 1956. He combined his pictorial practice with teaching; he was professor of classical drawing at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and from 1962 he was a corresponding member of the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. Est: €6,000 - €8,000

RIGOBERTO SOLER PÉREZ (Alcoy, Alicante, 1896 - Valencia, 1968). "Landscape". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 100 x 150 cm; 120 x 170 cm (frame). In this canvas we see a work perfectly inscribed within the Valencian luminism, captured with a brushstroke of great expressiveness, impastoed and dense in certain areas and lighter, almost invisible, in others. It is based on a composition with a symmetrical tendency, with the figure in the centre, although somewhat displaced to one side to avoid excessive compositional rigidity, and vertical elements at the sides in the manner of buildings that follow a diagonal leading to a large mountain dominated by a range of greens, a reflection of the luminists' interest in light. Beyond the foreground, the forms are blurred by the effect of distance, becoming a fluid and dynamic mass of greens, blues, yellows, whites and neutral tones that unify the background with the foregrounds, which stand out for the play of shadows magnificently captured by the artist.
