Virgil Solis - Frieze with owls and other birds

Frieze with nine owls, eight other birds and an insect. This print, signed VS in upper left corner is very close to a pair of similar Solis prints kept in the British Museum, one dated there 1541. Both prints have the same format, same design and same content with one or several owls amongst other birds. This print is probably the series that are the source for also famous later series made by Hans Collaert and Marcus Geeraerts. The print on auction comes from the a prestigius collection of Freiherr von Lana with his collection stamp twice on the backside. A rare print with an important place in the history of bird prints.

Landsknecht (mercenary) walking in a landscape with right arm up. Signed bottom left corner. Ca.1541. This VS signed drawing is very similar to a drawing preserved in the British Museum under number 1874,0808.2276 as a drawing by Solis. I added the one in the British museum (left) and this one (right) here on auction side by side as last image for reference only. Our drawing is also connected to one of Solis etchings from a series of eleven lansquenets, more specific the standard-bearer (Hollstein 143). As it is drawn in a more linear way, not a line to line copy and shows only a fraction of the cross hatching, our drawing might fit in a group of contemporary drawings as described by Inge,O’Dell, Francke (Die handzeichnungen Virgil Solis, Univ Göttingen, 1967), made in the of workshop of Solis and meant to be sold as independent works of art.

A museum-quality Augsburg silver gilt tankard

Slightly tapering vessel on three feet with lions' heads, engraved to the body with strapwork and fruit garlands surrounding three round medallions with repoussé depictions of the goddesses Venus, Diana and Pallas Athena after engravings by Virgil Solis (Nuremberg 1514 - 1562). The curved handle decorated with figures of Roman soldiers. The domed, hinged lid with corresponding decor, baluster-form finial and thumb rest formed as a mermaid and a lion mascaron. Later engraved underneath with a coat of arms and dedication "M.EBERHARD LIEBELER / VEREHRED:D.K.Z.S.AN.", dated 1642.

Im Jahr 1539 etablierte sich der talentierte Künstler Virgil Solis (1514-1562) in Nürnberg. Obwohl er anfangs mit Schwierigkeiten zu kämpfen hatte und sich sogar Geld leihen musste, wurde er zu einem der produktivsten und erfolgreichsten Künstler seiner Zeit. Es scheint, dass er einen gewissen Wohlstand erreichte, da er 1554 und 1558 Häuser kaufte. Nach seinem frühen Tod hinterließ er ein beträchtliches Vermögen und wurde mit den höchsten bürgerlichen Ehren beerdigt. Ein Jahr nach dem Kauf seines ersten Hauses veröffentlichte Solis sein erstes Wappenbuch, mit dem er die Macht und Bedeutung Nürnbergs illustrierte und beschwor. Solis war in erster Linie ein geschäftstüchtiger Unternehmer, der eine Vielzahl von fremden Vorlagen kopierte. Ein Großteil seiner Motive entnahm er der Chronik des Konstanzer Konzils von 1536 von Johannes Richental. Viele der Wappen in Solis' Werken sind eine Kombination aus Bistums- und persönlichen Wappen und repräsentieren die damals anwesenden Kirchenfürsten. Solis selbst bat in einer kurzen Vorrede den Leser, etwaige Mängel in den Wappen oder deren Farben nach Belieben zu korrigieren. Offensichtlich war ihm bewusst, dass die Wappen bereits als "veraltet" galten, und er begann einige von ihnen zu "modernisieren". Dabei veränderte er nicht nur die Form der Wappenschilder, sondern fügte auch fantasievolle Helmzieren und Helmdecken hinzu. Obwohl Solis' Wappendarstellungen bereits eine gewisse Abkehr von der zeitgenössischen Reichstreue zeigten, war sein Wappenbuch dennoch ein großer verlegerischer Erfolg. Es erschien erstmals im Dezember 1555 unter dem Titel "Wappenbuch". Spätere Ausgaben wurden als "Wappenbüchlein" bezeichnet. – Einige Blatt mit geringfügigen Randläsuren. Provenienz: Alt unleserlich gemachter Name sowie Exlibris-Spuren auf Spiegel. Schönes altkoloriertes und durchschossenes Exemplar.

[*] nach. Bildnis des Wolfgang Pömer. Radierung. 14 x 9,6 cm. Unbeschrieben. -- -- Der Hollstein verzeichnet von Virgil Solis einen vergleichbaren Abzug mit dem Bildnis Pömers (Hollstein 467). Auch wenn das Format der Platte und die Darstellung des Porträtierten sich entsprechen, unterscheidet sich in vorliegender Version die Kleidung, die hier wesentlich detailreicher dargestellt ist, ebenso der Hintergrund sowie die zusätzliche gestochene Benennung "Wolff Pömer P. Nor.". Virgil Solis' Blatt im Hollstein benennt den porträtierten Wolff Pömer lediglich mit einer Federannotation am Oberrand. Es handelt sich hier wohl um einen anonymen, aber äußerst fähigen Stecher, der Solis zum Vorbild nahm.- Prachtvoller, kräftiger Abzug mit breitem Rand. Die äußeren weißen Ränder ganz geringfügig fleckig, drei kleine Wurmlöchlein in der Darstellung, sonst sehr schön erhalten. -- -- - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. -- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
