From 1899 to 1902, he attended the school for metalworking in Königgrätz. When he was not accepted into the Prague School of Applied Arts, he studied at Ferdinand Engelmüller's private school for landscape painting. From 1903, he studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, among other things. with Vlaho Bukovac and František Thiele, but stopped studying in 1909. As a result, Špála lived mainly in Prague; However, he traveled to different areas of Bohemia painting. In 1907/8 he stayed in Ragusa (Dubrovnik). Further trips took him to Ragus (1910), to Paris (1911) and to Italy (1913). From 1907 to 1909, Špála was a member of the avant-garde group Osma, and from 1909 of the Mánes art association. In 1911 he left Mánes together with other artists due to differences of opinion and founded the avant-garde artist group Skupina výtvarných umelcu in the same year. Špála initially published numerous articles in their monthly magazine “Umelecký mesícník”. However, in 1912 he left with Josef Capek and Vlastislav Hofman and returned to the Mánes group, of which he was chairman from 1936 to 1939. In 1918, Špála founded the group Trvdošíjní with Capek and Kremlicka. Špála also worked with the artistic workshops “Artel”, of which he was a member and board of directors. Posters, illustrations and scenographic designs are particularly well known from his hand. In his painting he combined lyrical cubism with rhythmic composition and strong colours. His personal conception of images was associated with Fauvism, Orphism and abstraction painting. Špála was influenced by folklore, folk culture and art and was therefore closer to Josef and Karel Capek than to the “orthodox” Prague Cubists. He later developed his style in a more traditional way, in his landscapes as well as floral still lifes with flowers, using a color scale centered on blue tones. In his later works he again used a wider colour spectrum, with lower colour intensity. In 1959, the state-owned Českého fondu výtvarných umění was renamed „Galerie Václava Špály“ in his honour. Nicht nur in seiner Heimat gilt Vaclav Spala als einer der bedeutendsten Künstler der tschechischen Avantgarde. Das vorliegende Gemälde zeigt ein für den Künstler ganz typisches Stillleben mit Blumen in einem einfachen volkstümlichen Krug vor blauem Grund. Der zunächst durch die Fauvisten und später Kubisten geprägte Maler beschäftigt sich seit 1923 vorrangig mit Stillleben und der Landschaftsmalerei. Zu erwähnen ist, dass Blumen schon immer eine besondere Rolle für Spala spielten, so findet man diese Vorliebe schon in frühen Skizzenbüchern. Während er in den Jahren 1923 - 1926 eine vorwiegend "grüne Phase" durchläuft, etabliert er ab 1927 die Farbe blau in seinen Werken.         From the expert opinion of PhDr. Rea Michalová Ph.D.: "The submitted work "Bouquet on the Sázava before the storm" is an original, high-quality, dazzlingly vitalistic and motif-typical work by Václav Špála, a member of the progressive-oriented Group of Visual Artists, the Tvrdošijní group, a member and later chairman of SVU Mánes, one of the most prominent representatives of the Czech artistic avant-garde. Václav Špála painted the considered painting "Bouquet on Sázava before the storm" in a happy and successful period, when he was fifty years old. The flowers, depicted as a central motif in the considered painting, symbolized to Václav Špála beauty, freshness, brightness and well-being of life. Focusing on this seemingly simple subject resulted quite naturally from his intense interest in nature. In one of his reflections, he confessed how he is inspired again and again by the summer landscape, fragrant flowers in a vase or still life with fruit, how he emotionally experiences color and connects it with memory and music. It was a powerful wave of vitalism on which his entire work was carried and which also fully "The bouquet on Sázava before the storm" permeates the painting. The work is listed in author´s own catalogue raisonné under the number 68. Chvat₧ruby is a village located north of Prague on the Moldau river. Václav Špála is one of the major Czech modern artists. He was a member of most of the important Czech avantgard artistic groups formed in the first two decades of the 20th century – the groups Osma, Skupina výtvarných umělců and Tvrdošíjní. From the beginning of the 1920´s, he searched for the motifs for his paintings nearby Prague. In 1921 and 1922, he painted in Veltrusy and Ouholice, in 1923, in Kralupy and in Chvatěruby lying on the right bank of river Moldau, not far from Kralupy. There are two different artistic views being combine in his work of that time – the cubist which was about to end and the new way of seeing the landscape introducing his green period. It is quite obvious that the cubist feeling was still very strong in his means of expression, but the chosen motif already indicates his future artistic steps.         Flooded Berounka river, is an original, exceedingly typical, melodic landscape painting by Václav Špála, one of the foremost exponents of the Czech avant-garde movement and a member of the Group of Fine Artists, the Tvrdošíjní (“Stubborn Ones”) art group, and Mánes Union of Fine Artists. His painting was direct and vibrant, expressing sensual urgency. … From the very outset his Fauvist inclinations set him apart from his colleagues in the Osma group, whose work was oriented more towards Expressionism. Špála’s paintings always uniquely reflected a sense of immediacy and unrestrained joy from the painting process, as well as an essential sense for order, a feeling for pure color tone, and emancipation from agonizing existential questions. Through his new interpretation of the landscape and still lifes with flowers or fruits, Václav Špála became the main exponent of Bohemian painters’ affinity for the sensual hedonism of the ‘Golden’ Twenties. In his search for a striking, immediately potent expression, Špála did not hesitate to apply the principles of Post-Cubist deformation of form and to reduce the colors to two or three contrasting tones without denying his elementary relationship to the real natural world. His 'green period' lasted from 1923 to 1926, followed by his blue period in 1927–1930, when he painted in shades of aquamarine and Prussian blue, although this color retained its heraldic significance in his work until the end of his life. Špála’s hymn to nature is exemplarily reflected in his landscape paintings, which he approached with a sense of monumentality. One such painting is Flooded Berounka river, an enchanting specimen from Špála’s famed 'green period' that, in line with the period movements of the 1920s, marked a peak in his renewed contact with the reality of the seen world. Karel Teige aptly called Václav Špála a 'lyricist of nature … a broadcaster of the sun and life' intoxicated from the colors of joy. The most characteristic and most coherent group from this vitalist direction in terms of expression are his paintings from the area around Srbsko, a village on the Berounka River that the artist painted in 1925–1926. The painting was executed face-to-face with nature, en plein air. This particular painting is an unusually pure and generous and Špála masterfully captured the majesty of the cliffs, the smoothly flowing river, and the lush vegetation surrounding the meander under an azure summer sky.         As PhDr. Rea Michalová, PhD explains in her expert assessment: "Artwork „Bouquet beside Otava river“ is original, representative and exceptionally sensually pleasant piece by Václav Špála, one of the most significant performer of Czech artistic avantgarde and who is also among of our most popular classics." He created an unmistakable artistic style fed by cubist, fauvist and expressionist tradition with hard brush strokes and a vivid and very specific colour palette reduced to just a few striking tones. Dark blue became such a characteristic part of his paintings that later it received an adjective after his name. In his search for a striking, immediately potent expression, Špála did not hesitate to apply the principles of Post-Cubist deformation of form and to reduce the colors to two or three contrasting tones without denying his elementary relationship to the real natural world. His 'green period' lasted from 1923 to 1926, followed by his blue period in 1927–1930, when he painted in shades of aquamarine and Prussian blue, although this color retained its heraldic significance in his work until the end of his life. Even in his early sketchbook we can find words foreshadowing one of his dominant topics in future: "Beautiful flowers of the Earth! Flower is my joy - joy to my eyes, reconciliation of my heart. In all its beauty, in full uplift it looks up to the sun, to blue skies. Both with greens and blue sky it plays with its own joyful beauty of colours, pollen, full bloom. Flower is a silent beauty, raising up as a sphynx reflecting your soul." Just blooming tulips, daisies and irises have attracted painter's sharpened senses. Porcelain jug with folk decor from Štěchovice, carrying a crown of fully blooming flowers, is placed on a table with carpathian blanket. Author's typical arrangement is present as an abstract yellow note in background finding a "visual rhyme" in the bouquet. "Bouquet beside Otava river" is a masterpiece of Václav Špála with a message of "mysterious germination of life" which fascinated the author to the point where his rendering of "scentful world of flowers" was brought to perfection. The Czech-born painter and illustrator Vaclav Špála is one of the most important artists of the Czech avant-garde. Špála studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1905 visited the stimulating exhibition of Edvard Munch in the Manes Gallery. The gallery additionally showed paintings by the Fauvists and the Cubists, which had a strong influence on Špála's work. In 1911 he became a co-founder of the Group of Fine Artists and in 1918 the artist group Tvrdošíjní (The Stubborn Ones). Špála painted in his typical style from 1920 onwards. At first influenced by the Fauvists, his late work is strongly informed by Cubism. Simply contoured spaces are rendered in broad strokes of colour. Also very distinctive is the selection of colours — reduced almost exclusively to blue, red and white. After 1923 Špála mainly focused on still lifes and landscape painting. The work presented here is one of the artist's late works and shows a view of a river near Berounka and Otava with a striking cliff. This locality is depicted in several paintings by Špála from the 1930s onwards and must have been a favourite subject of his. Vaclav Špála is one of the classics of Czech painting, without whom no collection of Czech Modernism would be complete and whose work has also taken its place in international discourse. As Prof. Matějček described Špála's work: “[…] the artist speaks to us through his canvases. The painting represents an exceptional collector’s piece from the most valuable period in Špála’s career, when his work corresponded with the contemporary level of European painting. One can find a number of major figures in the international art world who were like-minded in their interpretations of certain themes. These include the aforementioned Fauvism, the Orphism of Robert Delaunay and Jacques Villon, the expressive colour of Die Brücke and, later, Der blaue Reiter… Špála’s creative composition of the painting places him on par with these artists| what is perhaps even more interesting is that the Czech artist was remarkable for his intuitive, exquisite painterly expression, which he mastered like very few others. 'This painting depicts one of Špála’s key pre-war and (briefly) post-war themes: bathing. Links with this motif reach |back to Renoir’s enchanted testament to reflections of light on pink skin, Cézanne’s structure, Derain’s balance of color and form, and to period Czech poetry (including Stanislav Kostka Neumann and Josef Hora), which metaphorize analogous ideas and feelings. Bathing can be described as a unique work by Špála featuring Cubist form and color accents as central elements of expression. He presents Cubist symbolism in the crystalline movement of material of the female body and landscape elements, water and cliffs, adding dynamics to the motion of the fields of color. 'The reduction of color to three main tones – red, blue, white and shades thereof – create a compelling Orphic accord and vibrant basis for Špála’s idyllic view of the world. In his bold, 'full' |brush strokes and in the organic unity of the figure and the landscape, the artist thoroughly applies the principle of the rhythm of color and form.         This niche in the port, captured with fresh strokes and using minimal means of expression and colors, predominantly blues, reds and ochres, testifies to Václav Špála’s great sensitivity as a painter. In this sketch he portrays a sunny day on the Mediterranean coast, which he liked to visit during his many sojourns through Southern Europe. The lazily swaying boats and sea bear the lessons of Cubism and Fauvism, while the mountains in the distance refer to one of the greatest figures in modern painting, Paul Cézanne. Cézanne’s segmentation of matter, composition of the picture, and sense of color provided a lifetime of inspiration to Špála. More than other painters, he favored personal experience and |never completed |his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was a member of many important art associations and groups, especially Osma and Tvrdošíjní (“Stubborn Ones”), with whom he exhibited.
