      Thomas Truman Spear (American (Boston, Massachusetts), 1803-1882). "The Messenger"-1862, oil on canvas, inscribed, signed, and dated lower right "T.T. Spear / Pinxit / 1862". Interior figural scene depicting many courtly figures in 18th century dress clustered around one seated young beauty in white with tearful face downturned and hand resting on an official document with a fallen white feather mounted quill pen resting on the ground at her feet, to the scene's right a male figure approaches a shadowy traveler with hand on his sword prepared to draw in combat. The scene set in a Continental interior with armorial stained glass windows hidden by floor length drapes flanking a palatial fireplace with oval landscape painting above. Two labels to verso for Brodney Gallery of Fine Arts, Boston. Framed approximately 44.5" x 55.75". Unframed approximately 40.25" x 50". Note: Thomas Spear was a noted member of the Boston artistic community where he was known for painting portraits as well as genre and historical scenes.
