    Very well preserved 17th century hand-colored engraving on paper by John Speede, the best known English mapmaker of the Stuart period. The Kingdom of Persia with the cheef Citties and Habites described by John Speede was published by G. Humble in 1626. It includes colored title and legends cartouches, three illustrated marginal borders, four city views. Sticker on verso: Thomas Co. Picture Framing, Washington D.C.     Or: "A Newe Mape of Tartary." Hand colored map "augmented" by British cartographer John Speede (1551 - 1629). Originally sold by London merchants Thomas Bassett of Fleet Street and Richard Chiswell in St. Paul's Churchyard. Map exhibits discoloration and a single discernible vertical fold down the center of the piece. Mounted on glass, on the verso of the map itself is a detailed "Description of the Kingdom of Tartary" and, on the frame, a guarantee by I.D.L. Antiques (Hong Kong). Map measures 20" x 15 1/4" by sight. Hogarth frame in fine condition. Not inspected out of frame. From the carefully curated collection of a Pan Am flight attendant, in service between the years of 1954 and 1984. According to the imprint, the map was “begun by Mr. John More, continued and finished by John Speede.” The map was reissued several times and resembles Ortelius’ Palestine after S. Tilemannus. The plan of Jerusalem (upper left) is after Arias Montanus. Title cartouche shows Moses and Aaron each holding one of the Tablets along with respective iconographic elements and with central Tetragrammaton. The Jerusalem inset is surrounded by vignettes of Temple vessels. Emblems of the Tribes, signifying the division of the land, appropriately placed throughout the map. Also displayed is the route of the Israelite exodus from Egypt.

The map was originally dated 1611 and included in Speed's "Genealogies of Holy Scriptures", inserted in the "Editio Princeps" of the King James Bible, published by Robert Barker in 1611 It was reissued several times and the date changed to 1651. It resembles Ortelius' Palestine after S. Tilemannus. The plan of Jerusalem is after Arias Montanus (ref: The Eran Laor Cartographic Collection). Please see Sotheby's London, 9 May 2017, Lot #30.
