        Jul. 11, 2024

        “Blancheurs” No. 4.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: MARY GOLAY (1869-1944) SIZE: 15 5/8 x 39 in./39.7 x 99 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, one possible meaning of “whiteness” is “freedom from stain.” And according to the title of this series, of which this example is Number Four, Golay has set her sights on an artistic manifestation of “Blancheurs,” or “Whitenesses,” if you will. Her graphic purity is, as always, beyond reproach, and her skill unassailable. In fact, she doesn’t even need to reveal the face of her virtuous maiden—her graceful port de bras, decorous accessorizing, and the avian trust that she inspires reveals all that we need to know. ARTIST: MARY GOLAY (1869-1944) SIZE: 15 1/2 x 38 1/2 in./39.5 x 97.8 cm DESCRIPTION: A sunny sunflower girl has a notion: a particularly buoyant one, it seems, as she's surrounded by a halo of songbirds. Mary Golay created dozens of decorative art panels, often with Eastern or Indian motifs. This one, however, celebrates the joys of springtime in a Mucha-esque way, but she adds a bit of whimsy and mischievousness to his iconographic religiosity. (Art Nouveau)

ARTIST: MARY GOLAY (1869-1944) SIZE: Each: 15 1/4 x 41 1/2 in./38.7 x 105.5 cm DESCRIPTION: Golay, never one to use her talents in the crude service of commerce, takes us on a sensual stroll into the heart of the “Poetry of Twilight” and “Morning Light.” The enigmatic artist, an utter devotee to the precepts of Art Nouveau and all the splendid excesses which that entails, ushers us into our Garden of Eden with a pair of exotic herons. She sends us luxuriantly into the evening in the company of two Ward’s herons, both set in marshy landscapes so pristine, so free of man’s wasteful thumbprint, that they can’t help but induce a wistful longing to be transported into their realm. In this panel, our poppy-ensconced Byzantine maiden retains all of the raven-haired charm of the dusky lithographic seductress seen in the aforementioned series. (Art Nouveau)

She may well be referencing the Greek Goddess Iris, who acted as the messenger of the gods and guided the dead from earth to heaven; purple irises were placed on the graves of women to summon the Goddess. Reveil du Jour. ca. 1899.

        Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: MARY GOLAY (1869-1944) SIZE: 15 3/8 x 38 3/8 in./39.2 x 97.6 cm DESCRIPTION: A sunny sunflower girl has a notion: a particularly buoyant one, it seems, as she's surrounded with a halo of songbirds. Mary Golay created dozens of decorative art panels, often with Eastern or Indian motifs. This one, however, celebrates the joys of springtime in a Mucha-esque way, but adding a bit of whimsy and mischievousness to his iconographic religiosity. (Art Nouveau)
