Francis Speight (American, 1896-1989) White House with Variations, 1930 oil on canvas signed Francis Speight and dated (lower right) 50 x 40 inches. The Collection of Philip and Judith Sieg, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania Provenance: The Artist Acquired from the Artist by the present owners, 1975 Exhibited: Washington, DC, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Thirteenth Exhibition of Contemporary American Oil Paintings, December 4, 1932 - January 25, 1933, no. 148 University Park, Pennsylvania State University Art Museum, Manayunk and Other Places: Paintings and Drawings by Francis Speight, September 8 - October 27, 1974, no. 11, pp. 9; 38, illus. Lot note: Born and raised in rural North Carolina, Francis Speight began his formal art education in 1920 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, but, after seeing an exhibition of Daniel Garber's landscapes, he enrolled to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Thereafter he remained at the Academy--first as a student, then as a teacher--for more than forty years. For most of this time, Speight's major subject was Manayunk, the subject of White House with Variations, 1930. Manayunk was an industrial area set above the Schuylkill River on the edge of Philadelphia. The hills, the light, and the architecture were endlessly fascinating to the artist, and he returned again and again to paint the same subject, often the same viewpoint, in all kinds of weather and at various times of day. According to a 1975 letter written by Speight to Philip Sieg, who purchased the painting directly from the artist, the present painting was executed from the front porch of Mrs. McHenry's home, 57 Jefferson Street in West Manayunk (now Belmont Hills), Pennsylvania. The artist lived in Manayunk for three or four years, while also sharing a studio part time in Philadelphia with the brothers Walter and Cyril Gardner. The studio had a Victrola and records of classical music, which Speight listened to. He particularly liked Johannes Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, a work in the form of a theme and variations. Inspired by the musical piece, the artist writes in the letter, "I decided to try to do a painting with variations in white using the white house across the street from Mrs. McHenry's." These "variations" can be seen in the white house, composed of warm, glowing whites highlighted by rose and yellow hues, which contrast against the deep blue-purple shadows cast by the overhanging eves and shrubbery to the left. Speight primarily concerned himself with depictions of quotidian life and focused his efforts in rural and suburban landscapes around Philadelphia, finding beauty in the industrial. In White House with Variations, figures walk along a steep hill in front of the house, emphasizing the daily routines of Pennsylvanians. The high horizon line allows the town to sprawl behind the subject, and the blue sky complements the red tones of the buildings clustered on the rolling hills of the landscape. Although the artwork is representational, it embodies the "lyrical interpretation" Speight's oeuvre was often described as. He would often paint the sky to portray a specific mood rather than strictly adhering to the weather conditions in which he painted the scene. In this way, the artist imbues his work with a sense of calm and transforms the everyday into visual poetry.

      Est: $5,000 - $10,000

Francis Speight (NC/PA, 1896-1989), Cypress Trees in Swamp oil on canvas, unsigned, circa 1970, inscribed on the verso by Sarah Blakeslee Speight (the artist's wife) "This is by Francis Speight / SBS," presented in a period frame with gallery plaque. Stretcher size 19 x 24 1/4 in.; Frame dimensions 24 1/4 x 29 1/2 in. Francis Speight was born in rural Bertie County, North Carolina in 1896. His began his art studies with Ida Poteat at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, followed by a brief period at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. While at the Corcoran, he was introduced to the work of Daniel Garber. Speight was so impressed with Garber’s American impressionist paintings that he moved to Philadelphia to study with the artist at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1925, Speight graduated from the academy but stayed as a painting and drawing instructor until 1961. This period of his work is characterized by tender scenes of the blue collar industrial towns surrounding Philadelphia. Bathed in dramatic rays of sun, or soft shadows, these paintings and their compositions seem to sway and dance across the canvas. The North Carolina Museum of Art mounted a retrospective of Speight’s work in 1961, marking the artist’s return to his home state. He and his wife, Sarah Blakeslee, moved to Greenville, North Carolina where he taught art at East Carolina University. This new position allowed him greater time and freedom to paint. Both he and Sarah would travel and paint across North Carolina, returning to Pennsylvania and the PAFA to teach summer classes. Francis Speight exhibited frequently throughout his lifetime, with solo exhibitions at Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH; Delgado Museum, New Orleans; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine, Philadelphia; Greenville Museum of Art, Greenville, NC; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; and more. His paintings are in numerous prominent private and public collections, including The Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC; Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, NC; Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC; National Academy of Design, New York; The Johnson Collection, Spartanburg, SC; and many more. FRANCIS SPEIGHT (AMERICAN 1896-1986) San Souci Ferry, Spring, 1969 oil on canvas 81 x 102 cm (31 7/8 x 40 1/8 in.) signed and dated lower left PROVENANCE Veronese Beatty Atkins Estate, Southern Pines, North Carolina Calvin Beatty Atkins Estate, Vero Beach, Florida Private collection, Connecticut LITERATURE Ben F. Williams, Francis Speight; a retrospective exhibition, (Raleigh, 1984), ex. cat., pp. 6-7, 24 (illustrated) LOT NOTES Francis Speight was born in Bertie County, North Carolina, in 1896. After being drafted, but never deployed, into the U.S. Army, Speight enrolled at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. Inspired by an exhibition of the American Impressionist Daniel Garber at the institution, Speight decided to seek out Garber's instruction at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Speight would spend some forty years at the Academy, as both student and teacher. He remained fascinated by the atmospheric light and verdant variety of the natural landscape -- whether along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia or Cashie River in North Carolina, where he returned in 1961. The Cashie River and its Sans Souci Ferry, seen in the present work, were a particularly beloved subject matter, painted over the seasons and through the years in a lively and memorable manner. CONDITION Observed in frame, the painting appears in age-appropriate condition. The canvas slightly warped. Small stain to the right edge. Otherwise, no significant issues to report. Inspection under UV shows no apparent signs of restoration. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition. The report is a genuine opinion held by Shapiro Auctions and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report or a photograph does not preclude the absence of defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. Provenance: Robert Cheek Fine Arts, Inc., Charlotte, NC, June 21, 1985. Note: Fellow artist Hobson Pittman spoke of Francis Speight, "There is almost an uncanny sense of communication with nature found in the work of Francis Speight; his houses are lived in, sunlight sharply defines edges and forms, shadows actually crawl over planes and become absorbed with light as they juxtapose themselves with higher pitched colors." This quote perfectly describes "Red Clay Street, Statesville, N.C.," with its rich hues and mixture of light and shadow. Following the conclusion of World War I, Speight attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, continuing there as a student teacher and instructor. He painted primarily in the Philadelphia area, including Manayunk and Doylestown, although Speight also made short painting and sketching excursions to North Carolina, as evidenced by the well-exhibited and masterful work offered here.
