Note: From the delta region of Mississippi, Henry Speller labored as a sharecropper and on the Mississippi river loading cotton bales. While working, Speller would often “make up stories to stay sane” about the women he admired on passing paddlewheel boats and later draw his daydreams. The majority of his works are pencil and crayon sketches of beautifully dressed and seemingly unapproachable women. Art collector William Arnett described Speller’s work as the work of exclusion: racial, economic and social. As is evident in the work offered here, the power of Speller’s drawings lies in the fervent tension between the attainable and the impossible. Ref.: Arnett, William. “Handy Man”.
