          • A Rome 1960 Olympic Games bronze prize medal
            May. 22, 2014

A Rome 1960 Olympic Games bronze prize medal

            Est: £4,000 - £6,000

A Rome 1960 Olympic Games bronze prize medal awarded to the South African 400m athlete Malcolm Spence, designed by Giuseppe Cassioli, the obverse with Victory seated over a stadium, the reverse with a winner being carried by jubilant athletes, suspended from a bronze chain formed of olive leaf links, the base of the medal inscribed ATLETICA, mounted in a frame together with a picture of Malcolm Spence competing in the 400m at Rome accompanied by a press cutting, 51 by 33cm., 20 by 13in. South Africa's Malcolm Spence took bronze in the 400m at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games in a time of 45.5 secs, behind Otis Davis of the USA and Carl Kaufmann of Germany who recorded identical World Record times of 44.9 secs, the decision going to the American. Spence was popular with the Rome crowd who adored his extravagant Edwardian-style moustache. By an extraordinary coincidence there were two athletes by the name of Malcolm Spence competing in the 400m. at Rome, the other representing Jamaica. They met in the semi-final and the Jamaican shortened his name to 'Mal' in order to counter any possible administrative muddle. Spence was strongly fancies to win gold going into the Games at Rome but sustained an Achilles injury shortly before the final. The dramatic impact of this event was best described by Vince Kahn, a veteran South African reporter who saw the race as follows: - The Union Flag was hoisted for the first time as a mark of triumph in the Olympic Stadium, here, today after the world record-breaking final in which the Springbok, Malcolm Spence, finished third to the American Otis Davis, and Carl Kaufmann of Germany. This was the greatest 400 metre race ever run, all six finalists finishing inside 46 seconds. Spence ran the race of his life and to him must go the credit that the 45 second barrier was broken for the first time - a feat undreamed of a few years ago. The Springbok, running in the fourth lane, set off at a tremendous pace and was in front on entering the final straight. Striding out magnificently Spence appeared set for victory, but the American Negro and the German got on terms with him shortly before the tape. Try as he did, the South African and Empire record holder could not hold them off and had to be content with third place. In South Africa you can charge your glasses and drink to a hero. Spence had ten pain killing injections in his tendon before he went on to the huge Olympic Stadium in front of nearly 100,000 people to run the race of his life. Today I saw the bravest man of these Olympic Games in Rome and there was a lump in my throat as I watched him hobble off the track. 1960 was the last Olympic Games in which South Africa competed before the UN General Assembly Resolution 1761 barred the nation from the Games in response to South Africa's policy of apartheid. Thereafter South Africa did not participate in Olympic Games until Barcelona in 1992. Malcolm Spence in 1960 was therefore the last track and field athlete to medal until Elana Meyer took silver in the women's 10,000m at Barcelona. Malcolm Spence won gold as part of the successful South African Empire and Commonwealth Games 4x400m team at Cardiff in 1958, and took silver in the individual event behind India's Milkha Singh.
