(b Rochester, United Kingdom 1865; d Northampton 1958) British painter. Charles Spencelayh was trained in drawing at the National Art Training School in Britain. He went on to study in Paris and exhibited his work at the Paris Salon. From 1912 until 1958, Spencelayh showed his paintings at the Royal Academy in Britain. Many of his pieces were collected by influential individuals including Queen Mary. Spencelayh is known for his highly detailed and naturalistic genre scenes, still life paintings, and portraits.

Condition Report: Framed: 32.5 x 27cm On very close inspection under raking light it is possible to see some light surface scuffs and scratches to the background but overall the miniature presents well. There is a small mark/ abrasion to the left edge, upper centre, which has the appearance of a finger print. There are thunderbugs trapped behind the glazing but the work itself does not appear to be affected. Not viewed out of glazed frame.

    "Self-portrait" or "WHY WAR? - 1939" Mixed media: watercolour, oil, gouache and graphite, 31 x 25.5 cm, signed and dated "C. SPENCELAYH. 1948." lower right. He painted this exceptional self-portrait in front of the pencil sketch of his famous painting "WHY WAR? 1939" (Painting measuring 95 x 115 cm - collection of the Harris Museum in London). An English painter, he painted with almost photographic detail and was a favourite of Queen Mary, who was a fervent collector. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 until his death in 1958, including the 1939 painting "WHY WAR", in which he painted himself seated with a gas mask next to him and an open newspaper about Chamberlain's failure to make peace with Hitler. Delivery of lots free of charge in Paris (rue Drouot), Lyon or Marseille a few days after the sale, or shipment from France at the buyer's expense by the carrier of his choice. "Autoportrait" ou "WHY WAR ? - 1939" Technique mixte : Aquarelle, Huile, Gouache et Mine de plomb, 31 x 25,5 cm, signée et datée "C. SPENCELAYH. 1948." en bas à droite. Il a peint cet exceptionnel autoportrait devant l’esquisse au crayon de son célèbre tableau "WHY WAR ? 1939" (Peinture de 95 x 115 cm - collection du Musée Harris de Londres). Peintre anglais, il peignait avec un détail presque photographique et fut le peintre préféré de la reine Mary qui sera une fervente collectionneuse. Il exposa de 1892 à son décès en 1958 à la Royal Academy dont en 1939 "WHY WAR" (Pourquoi la guerre), il s’est peint assis avec près de lui un masque à gaz et un journal ouvert sur l’échec de Chamberlain pour faire la paix avec Hitler. Remise des lots sans frais de transport à Paris (rue Drouot), Lyon ou Marseille quelques jours après la vente ou l'envoi de France à la charge de l’acheteur par le transporteur de son choix.

    Charles Spencelayh, English, 1865 to 1958, oil painting on canvas, Musicians and Friends, depicting a double portrait of men, a guitar player, 1946. Signed and dated, lower left. Framed. A gold tone plate showing the name of the artist, on the front of the frame. Charles Spencelayh is known for Figure, genre and portrait painting-miniatures. Acclaimed by one critic as the modern Meissonier of British Domestic life, Charles Spencelayh was a painter of figure subjects, genre scenes and portraits. He has also been compared to William Powell Frith in his skilful evocation of sentiment and meticulous rendering of detail. He worked in many media achieving great acclaim as a miniaturist, watercolourist and etcher. One of a kind artwork.
