    Jaroslav Špillar was one of the leading painters of the Chodsko region. Jindřich Šimon Baar characterized his work with these words: "Jaroslav Špillar, he was not such a fleeting painting bird who simply made love and let go. Špillar really fell in love with Chodsko. He "buried" himself in a small village and was satisfied with the simple life. He studied Chodsko, observed, painted. He searched for models for his paintings at every opportunity. He met ordinary people in pubs, at festivities, during spinning yarn and processing feathers, in the field, on pasture, and in these wanderings he learned to understand the people, to know their souls and to love them."     SPILLAR Jaroslav 1869 Plzen - 30. 11. 1917 Dobrany) Picking apples - a study Watercolour and Chinese white on paper, 38 x 17 cm, framed, glazed, undated, unsigned, stamp of Karasek gallery and verification of authenticity by Jiri Karasek ze Lvovic on the reverse. Czech painter, he studied at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Prague under professor Zenisek and Schikaneder, then under M. Pirner at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. He was concerned with Naturalism but included characteristic contemporary sentimental features in his work. See T 2/552, B 9/748, NECVU 2/838.

    SPILLAR Jaroslav (1869 Plzen - 30. 11. 1917 Dobrany) Standing female nude Coloured chalks on paper, 66 x 24,5 cm, framed, glazed, undated, signed lower right with initials. The painter rendered an allegorical subject - probably the personification of Spring, making use of Impressionist brushwork and palette. The quality of the painting brings it close to the work of another leading Symbolist Czech painter - J. Preisler. Czech painter, he studied at the Academy of Decorative Arts in Prague under professor Zenisek and Schikaneder, then under M. Pirner at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. He was concerned with Naturalism but included characteristic contemporary sentimental and idealizing features in his work. See T 2/552, B 9/748, NECVU 2/838.
