    Dec. 08, 2022

    KAREL ŠPILLAR 1871 - 1939 - BATHING

    Est: -

Karel Špillar did not view the character in the same way as his teacher Ženíšek, the character was rather a part of the plot. He liked vivid and pastel tones, which he stirred up in an impressionistic spirit and placed the figures in different seasons, when young girls in nature act as a metaphor for her awakening, flourishing life or rest. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower left "K. Špillar"

  • KAREL ŠPILLAR (ATTRIBUTED) 1871 - 1939 - SITTING GIRL
    Jun. 14, 2022

    KAREL ŠPILLAR (ATTRIBUTED) 1871 - 1939 - SITTING GIRL

    Est: -

The figure of a young girl in an autumn grove is probably a characteristic example of Špillar's work and also a move towards an Art Nouveau-tuned act, both in the choice of theme and in the technique of drawing. He liked pastel tones, a fine, refined technique that often crystallized to the impression. It does not depict real nature, but according to V.V. Štech, he was not a "copyist" of nature and he did not look at the figure like his teacher Ženíšek, the character was part of the story. The work dates from the period when Špillar probably lived in France. The work was consulted with PhDr. Petr Wittlich, CSc. Technique: Charcoal, pastel, paper, Signed: Unsigned

  • KAREL SPILLAR (1871-1939) RECLINING FEMALE NUDE
    May. 28, 2015

KAREL SPILLAR (1871-1939) RECLINING FEMALE NUDE

    Est: -

KAREL SPILLAR (1871-1939) RECLINING FEMALE NUDE Around 1915, Bohemia This undeservedly neglected artist studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under František Ženíšek from 1885 to 1893. He lived in Paris from 1902 - 1909. Starting in 1913 he taught nude drawing at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design and was later made full professor. Špillar's artistic interests mainly centered around women and female nudes. His work went beyond Ženíšek's academic mannerism, however; in the Art Nouveau spirit Špillar brought his works to life and lent them a chaste sensuality. This work comes from a major Prague collection. Oil on canvas, original frame, signed on the right at the top: Karel Špillar.
